he covers the trona area, we've talked to a number of people from trona. you tell me what are your biggest challenges right now? >> so right now our biggest challenge is going to be the isolated -- this is one of our outside outlying areas so our firefighters in the area are conducting damage assessment surveys and out there in the streets checking for excess issues, any damage to the roadway, any potential hazards such as gas leaks or power line issues or anything that would result from the actual earthquake itself so damaging infrastructure. we have different resources responding out there as well to assist with that. >> can you describe some of the damage that's being reported in san bernardino county? >> at this point we're getting reports of minor to moderate damage to the structure itself that consists mainly of cracks in stucco or drywall. our fire station out there actually had some of their oxygen tanks or sonars detached from the wall that were secured, and computers falling off their desks. we do have some reports of up to 4 inches in the main h

closer to trona? >> yes, closer to trona. >> right here. >> and we suspect that the fault is actually ruptured much further to the northwest. that is the area that's on the china lake naval weapons station. presumably they're not able to get out there tonight. we are obviously seeing displacements that are associated with this earthquake. and what it's seeing here, this is about 37 centimeters. >> about one foot. >> about a foot in total. and one thing you can notice in this, it's actually not just a single break, right there. is a distribution across numerous faults. and that's what we had seen before. this is a -- >> let me ask you this. so does that mean we're looking at a surface rupture of about 25 miles in length? >> well, this is just one point. and it's down towards the south. i would speculate that we will find surface rupture along to the northwest as well. >> am i incorrect in thinking there would be more of the surface rupture closer to the point of origin? >> it can be highly variable. an

it hit trona and little lakes.lt as far north as sacramento and as far east as las vegas. items off of a supermarket shelves. there were some gas leaks that were followed by plenty of fires. electricity and water outages are in many parts of san bernadino counties. molly hunter is in ridgecrest right now. we were told they can expect some aftershocks for quite some time. have you felt major ones so far? >> it hasn't stopped shaking. i was looking at the usgs website that lists the aftershocks in real-time. it was so terrifying. so strong, so violent. it felt like we were shaking for five minutes. that's because we were. there were 11 quakes in very quick succession, within seconds of each other. all over four. the 5.0. 7.1. and it just continued. we were shaking at a really high, really scary level for about five minutes. since then, dozens of aftershocks. a lot over 4.0. when you're so close to epicenter, we can feel the 3.2 magnitude quakes. in san diego, they may not be able to. i was in los angeles on thursday

we went about eight miles east, and we were about -- to the town of trona. and if the ground shook, the hills came alive. were we on epicenter? will we know where the epicenter is? geologists throughout were analyzing the first fissure, and then the ground broke where we are driving. that a new fault? >> in essence, where was the epicenter? is that something we can state officially that we know at this point? >> yeah, let's go ahead and do that then. >> ken hedna. the information gets updated continuously, so people are checking the automated locations, and that gets updated through time. and also you notice the magnituded bounce around just a little. so that's just normal. so the epicenter of the main shock, when i was doing this before, the 6.4 where it intersects the northeast oriented fault, the epicenter of the main shock is just about here. it's in a remote part of the base. i don't have a place name to give it a name right now. we're not going to call the name of the fault that it's on until we get eyes on that hopefully tomorrow. we'll confirm which

we actually ended up going about 25 miles from here to trona, california. it is a town that is very, very small. and we heard that there might somebody damming there, and there was. i want you to take a look at this. sometimes it's hard to see the damage and hard to figure it out, but look at this slab. this is a shell gas station owned by a gentleman named roger sandoval. and he talked about the fact that over the past couple of days since the 6.4 quake and then subsequently the 7.1 earthquake, he noticed the slab on top of his large gas tanks that feeds the tanks that you put in your car all of a sudden the slab started going down, first an inch, then a couple inches, now three or four inches and it is sinking. he is very concerned avenue went through quite a shaking the night before last. >> the last one was more quick, faster and last longer. so i just hang on to my refrigerator. i was eating dinner at home. so i just grab my refrigerator and stay with it. >> reporter: now mr. sandoval was very concerned because this is his livelihood, this is his busin

in the trona area. but you can see this particular fault line, they were talking about how the seismic activity is radiating further north towards that naval weapons station facility near china lake. so the fault here is about 25 miles long. and this is a shorter fault and yes they are perpendicular. and we see this a lot in this region. this is not associated with the san andreas fault. is san andreas fault is essentiy a huge plate tectonic. but we have different areas here intersecting. so we get that magnitude and the energy radiates out and in los angeles, they are saying with the july 4th earthquake that it felt like it was rumbling or shaking for about 30 seconds. well, the initial quake was only five seconds. but because it is bumping into these mountains and different densities of material through the ground, that is why it is shaking as it goes along until eventually it slows down. so it probably really did feel like 30 seconds. this particular main shock lasted between 20 and 25 seconds. that

there are reports of collapsed buildings, power outages and gas leaks in the small town of trona in san bernardino county. a hospital and a number of care facilities have also been impacted. officials say there are multiple injuries reported, but it is unclear how many. there are resources that were already deployed in the area after thursday's quake. >> we have significant reports of fires, structure fires, mostly as a result of gas leaks or gas -- a line breaks. there are gas line breaks throughout the city. there are also reports of water main breaks. power is out and communications is out to parts of the community. >> in a series of tweets, governor gavin newsom says the state of california will continue to offer support to aid residents in the region. the governor had officially requested a presidential emergency declaration for direct federal assistance to further support emergency response and recovery in impacted communities. he has always activated the state operations center in mather to its highest level and the center is working closely with state, federal and local emergenc

it also left a huge crack in this road in the small town of trona. >> holy [ bleep ] >> in ridgecrest, a small town, residents are dealing with the worst. they say the shaking lasted about 30 seconds and knocked them off their feet. >> i couldn't get off the floor. i wasn't even sure if i could stay on my hands and knees. >> it was never ending. and i tried to get off the couch. he was starting for the door. and it knocked him down. and fires were reported in ridgecrest after the earthquake. although it wasn't clear exactly what sparked the flames. at ridgecrest regional hospital, patients were evacuated as a precaution. ultimately, about 20 patients were transferred to other facilities so engineers could inspect broken pipes at the hospital. the shaking also cut power to several local businesses. >> i started like feeling swaying. and i feel like, was i getting dizzy or something? but then i realized that all the boxes were swaying as well. but then all of a sudden, all of the lights turned off. >> the shaking was much less severe, 100 miles south in los angeles. where one person too
