it, too, dealing with the effects from tropical storm irene. despread power outages as well as a few puddles of water here and there. earlier, i spoke to the mayor of stamford, connecticut, a city that was projected to get a direct hit from irene. but thankfully it didn't. here's what mayor michael pavia had to say about the conditions in his city. >> the surge, we were worried about the coincidence of the surge and the peak runoff of the heavy rainfall, and then combine that with the winds that are pushing water back on land. we were able to dodge that bullet. we saw some surging. we saw some high waves. it was a very angry long island sound. we saw flooding of roads. we saw some -- many, many trees down. in fact, in the northern country, the streets are littered with branches and leaves. it's almost like a leaf confetti all over. the third leg of this storm, the tripod, is the cleanup and restoration. and that's going to take us quite a while from what i saw. and what i can see. we are currently without power. about 20,000 of our residents. wh

we have some big news in from the national hurricane center regarding tropical storm irene. you heard right. hurricane irene has been officially downgraded from a category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm that will certainly be met with good news on a official level for many as this horrible storm don't churn up the eastern seaboard. squarely in its sights new york city and the surrounding areas, long island and new jersey, connecticut has been brutally feeling the brunt of it particularly along the coast there with the connecticut river. not out of the woods yet. massachusetts and beyond all the way up to maine. it's very important, everyone, to keep in mind despite the tropical storm downgrade there's still horrific winds and extended rains which mean an already saturated northeast will continue to get pounding rains and potential for flooding is very serious. another good morning to all of you. i'm alex witt here on msnbc world headquarters. we're staying on with our extended coverage. we'll go our meteorologist bill karins with the official weather update. good morning. >>

i guess the bottom line, irene now a tropical storm, still a threat out there, but it will be quickly leaving and the cleanup will begin as we go throughout the night tonight and all day monday. >> all right. bill karins up in new york for us, our meteorologist. thanks very much. joining me now from the regional operations intelligence center in ewing, new jersey, is the governor of new jersey, chris christie. governor, good to have you here. what's your big issue, your big concern this morning? >> david, our big concern right now is flooding, not only on the coast, but inland. we have our rivers here that are swelling over their banks. we have flooding inland already and we have over 250 road closures already in new jersey, more than 15,000 people in 45 different shelters, and that number is climbing, and we have over 500,000 people without power. and so, what we're transitioning now towards is dealing with the flooding and the aftermath. the good news is we got a million people off the jersey shore in 20 hours and i think we would have had significant loss of life if we hadn't done

. >> what has been tropical storm irene has crossed over into canada but they expect to be cleaning upor weeks or even months. at least 26 deaths are being reported now or being blamed on irene, we're getting that figure in. in vermont the governor says flooding is the worst in century. the situation has improved at the state capitol where authorities feared that upstream dam may fail. the transit system are coming back online. three major airports resumed service, laguardia and j.f.k. were closed. 1500 flights are cancelled and out it could be days and weeks before some of the 4.35 million without electricity get it back. john hendron has more on irene's impact. >> reporter: new england took irene's final punch. >> i know it would be once in a lifetime sight. >> after ravaging the states, it battered through the northeast's biggest cities, philadelphia, new york and boston. 65 million americans brace forward an epic disaster of hurricane, winds and water. at the most ferocious, winds reached 115 miles an hour but what killed the most people was a hazard in their own backyard. >> it wa

tropical storms. it experienced the fury of tropical storm irene.s is gary tuchman, cnn in vermont. >>> and one of the other major effects of the storm has actually been on travel. today much of the travel tangle is being smoothed out with trains and planes back in service. that doesn't mean, though, that the travel headaches are exactly over. chad myers joining us now. what is the word in terms of travel from the airports and the airlines? >> tens of thousands of people that were supposed to be on planes over the weekend that didn't leave. now those tens of thousands of people are trying to get into hundreds of vacant seats. this isn't going to be smoothed out in one day. this won't be smoothed out until basically the end of the week, if then. probably not advisable to just go to the airport and sit there and wait for a flight. you need to call and get a reservation. get yourself a seat. i know there are some places that fly stand by. there are other places that don't allow that. you can't get by security if you don't have a ticket, right? here we

tropical storm irene, a tropical system that will be strengthening over the next few days. on florida by friday. that's a storm we'll be watching closely over the next few days. we have a tropical system to our south that's weakening, it's running smack into very cool sea surface temperatures. it may try to aim toward the bay area tuesday and wednesday. we're going to leave those thundershowers for the mountain areas out of the forecast for now. as the high builds from the desert southwest, it could steer some of this moisture to the bay area. tomorrow morning, 50s to start the day, lunchtime we'll see some 70s popping up inland much today and i think tomorrow will be the coolestee se see in the seven-day forecast. more 70s to i80 in san jose, 60 in san francisco and oakland. the seven-day forecast shows tuesday and wednesday. we'll see 90s coming back, next weekend should see some 90s in our valleys. wednesday, really the day to watch as the tropical moisture comes up out of the south. could get a little muggy in the bay area. >>> still ahead at 11:00, the intersection of
