. >> lynnette trotman decided to have weight loss surgery after being diagnosed with blood pressure.> i with us so happy when i go to the doctor that the scale would be able to tell me my weight. >> reporter: she chose a procedure called gastric banding. doctors put an adjustable band around a apartment of the stomach. trotman thought banding was the safest option but three years later after complaining to her doctor, she had the band removed. >> i told her like, what is going on, you know. i'm not losing any weight, i'm gaining weight still. >> reporter: trotman's experience is not unusual. more than half who chose gastric banding were still obese after six years according to a new study in the archives of surgery. patients also had more long-term complications following surgery where doctors use staples to create a new pouch the study found those who had it lost weight more quickly and kept it off longer than those who had a band. the doctor says there's a reason why patients may have better results. >> when we remove parts of the stomach, we change the hunger that controls hunger
