trotter felt w.e. dubois was in line with trotter in those days. that upset trotter. trotter eventually left the side of booker t. washington if you could ever say you he was really by his side because he didn't believe in forgetting to fight for rights and fighting against injustice. but -- but his protest was very different from trotters. trotter is what we would see with king and malcolm k3 actively confronting those responsible for racial injustice where as the voice protested through scholarship and many of you are familiar with "the souls of black folks." that was trotter's message. now i thought i might open it up to any questions you all might have. feel free. yes? >> i'm curious if from ther tried to combine his protest efforts with others at the time which would include women veterans, others. >> absolutely. he had something called the political league. changed names several times. i don't know why. never could find out. but trotter actually worked with the naacp. his organization andors served as the umbrella organizations as well as the engines and a lot o

it was trotter who grabbed my attention. i was about five years ago, an article i was reading in a made a reference to trotter, a newspaperman and civil rights leader. and i live in boston, i am a journalist, i teach there. i did not really know him. it embarrassed me in a way for all of the reasons i just mentioned. i started reading further and realized what a big deal he was in the early 1900s, a forgotten civil rights leader who in the early 1900 would've been mentioned in the same breath as booker t. washington web dubois. i was going, maybe a biography in this guy? he was advocating a new strategy in civil rights and challenging booker t. washington. i learned there was a biography written 40 years ago that as long out-of-print of print that was titled "the guardian," the name of his weekly newspaper. i said, there's a place for a new biography. but then i got to 1915 and just the surface in some of these references to how he was at the forefront of this extended protest against the movie that i knew about. that was my

and since then, trotter has done his share to maintain his image of that. >> trotter has maintained thatinmate from abusive staff. >> some of them were stabbed but some of them were beat up. some of them went to the court and overexaggerated their wounds. >> the judge in trotter's case saw nothing to laugh about. >> i was found guilty of one count of attempted murder, one battery, four counts of criminal defilement and one count of rioting. and i was sentenced to 142 years. and was like, wow. most violence is spontaneous. that's what that was. it was spontaneous. one incident led to something else led to something else led to something else, but it's never the solution. >> trotter has now been in prison for 26 years. due to his role in the riot and other disciplinary problems, he's spent 16 of those years in the secure confinement unit. >> due to his behaviors in the past, trafficking, extortions, intimidations we consider him to be a risk to our safety. therefore, he was placed on administrative segregation. >> trotter has spent many of his years in confinement, reading and writing. he
