news 6's troy campbell joins us with the breaking new details. how did this escalate into shots being fired? >> reporter: yeah, the scene is still very active. we're as close up as we possibly can go up to the crime tape. you can also see crime scene investigators still out here collecting evidence. palm bay police say this all started about 9:30 this morning when a 39-year-old man who allegedly threatened three construction workers doing work on his neighbor's house. the workers called police saying the man threatened to shoot him. the police used an intercom system to get the man out of the house. he exited the home for the final time and police say he was holding a handgun. officers then fired one fatal shot at the man.

news 6 reporter troy campbell is following the developing story for us tonight. are investigators still out there right now? >> reporter: yeah, it's still a very active scene. just moments ago, we saw investigators place a blue tarp near the entryway of the home. police saying this all started when a group of construction workers called 911 saying they were being threatened. >> we just saw a lot of commotion down there. you know, of course, the road was blocked off. >> reporter: palm bay police say the 39-year-old hispanic man, shot dead by police tuesday morning. construction workers saying the man threatened to shoot them. the man, refusing to come out of his home for about two hours. >> you just never know. things happen, you know. it is a nice, quiet neighborhood. but you never know what it can happen pretty much right next door to you. >> reporter: use an intercom system, an officer with the palm bay police department over eight the officer, also a u.s. air force veteran described by the chief as an exemplary officer. >> i feel bad for him. i have a lot of l

news 6 reporter troy campbell went to the neighborhood today. what have you been able to find out? >> reporter: well, for starters, the road behind me is the only way in and out of the entire neighborhood. neighbors tell us that since the shooting, the homeowners association is looking into the possibility of adding surveillance cameras to the entrance. >> you just have a lot of young families here, raising their kids. >> neighbors in the moss park ridge subdivision says crime in the area is rare. several saying they remain on 22 times saturday night. the community is now looking at options to make the area more safe. >> we're even talking about what we could do to be proactive, whether it's security cameras to continue to keep the safe environment here. the family who lives inside the home admits to news 6 their son got into a fistfight with one of the suspects earlier in the night. as revenge, the two showed up at the house. the two men were aggressive, demanding they speak with his brother. soon after that, one of the men reached for a gun. with a 6-month-old baby inside, he sla

news 6 reporter troy campbell is at the scene right now where it all happened. what have we learned out there today? >> reporter: well, being out in the neighborhood, we've also discovered this street behind me, it is the only way in it and out of the entire subdivision. witnesses say that after the shooting, the suspect's vehicle had to go around the block in order to turn around. this allowed for several people to see a clear view of the suspect's license plate. >> missed my grandson. he could have been dead right now. my son could have been shot out here. >> reporter: bullet holes covering the garage of this lake nona home. the bullets narrowly missing the small sheriff's office says no arrests have been made. the family gave a plate number of the two suspects in the vehicle. this is the same guy the son got into a fistfight earlier in the night. >> he's an autistic kid. we have to keep him calm day and night. last night i had to put him in my room, sleep with us because he wouldn't sleep. >> reporter: again the orange county sheriff's office only saying the

news 6 reporter troy campbell is following the story tonight. these suspensions involve the entire street crimes unit? >> reporter: that's exactly right. the others not involved, they've been reassigned. we are told that the public defender in the case is the one who discovered this surveillance video. i'm also currently in the process of reviewing the three officers' personnel records and first time one of those officers has been suspended on the job. >> there's a lot of questions about exactly what happened and how. >> reporter: state attorney jeff ashton saying his investigators put a stop to the criminal prosecution of a suspect once this surveillance video came to light. it was recorded at the tropicana motel back on november 24th. kissimmee officer tiffany hall is seen in the video entering a hotel room where a drug suspect was staying. the only problem, in the charging affidavit, she wrote that the two other officers weren't with her and that she was alone. >> we realized we could not go forward. there was a serious contradiction between

news 6 reporter troy campbell left an entire unit of the kissimmee police force suspended. >> reporter: the three officers were taken off the job last thursday after the public defender discovered the surveillance video. once state investigators were able to review it, they say they had no other options but drop the charges against the suspect. the surveillance video captured at the tropicana motel on november 24th shows three kissimmee police officers walk into a room where a drug suspect was staying. shortly after, all three leave with the suspects in cuff. the problem, in the charging affidavit, the officer tiffany hall said she was alone without the help of the two officers. now all three have been suspended from the department's street crimes unit. >> cameras are wonderful things as long as we understand that a picture. state attorney jeff ashton calls it a sad situation for anyone in law enforcement when a representative of the law is questioned for their credibility. forward. contradiction between the tape and what was testified to and so the case was dropped at that point. >> r

news 6 reporter troy campbell spoke to people who live near >> reporter: someone who lives across the street from where the incident happened say they were inside their home and didn't hear a thing. >> we had no idea. that's scary. >> reporter: she lives across the home where on january 29th, these four suspects forced their way inside. a teenage girl and her mother's boyfriend, tied up for hours. the home, completely ransacked. during the entire incident, stage was at home, unaware of what was going on across the street. >> literally, while we were inside having dinner with our children, watching tv and then getting our children in bed, people were being tied up, tortured, having their houses destroyed and being robbed and just violently attacked. right outside of our door. >> reporter: she says in recent weeks the homeowners added these surveillance cameras. it's possible the four suspects followed the victim home from a nearby business. their motive, to steal money. the suspects also tied her up. mother and daughter were able to call 911 almost 11 hours later when the suspects left

news 6 reporter troy campbell spoke with investigators about the wanted crooks. he joins us now live. >> reporter: the employee at this sunglass hut off i-drive, he told police the two men came in, pretended to actually shop before they just started filling up some bags they had. they did not have masks and they looked right into the camera. >> these images, captured on surveillance video inside the sunglass hut on i-drive. you can see one of the suspects in a blue plaid shirt, filling a red bag with glasses. the store employee standing near the register, telling police he feared for his life after the suspect said he had a gun. the suspect then demands money, taking $4,000 in cash. in fact, they started selecting items and then demanded the money is a little odd. >> a total of 29 oakley and prada sunglasses were taken, a value of almost $6,000. the store employee is then seen being directed in the back room. the suspect then decides he wanted a few more pairs of glasses. >> we don't know if there was a gun in the bag or not. you imply firearm and it causes a lot

news 6 reporter troy campbell explains. >> reporter: it was sunday evening at the sunglass hut off i-drive. an employee was working alone. he says two men came inside and pretended to shop before getting merchandise and cash. this surveillance video showing two hispanic men entering the sunglass hut on i-drive sunday evening. one of the suspects is seen filling a red bag with 29 pairs of designer oakley and prada sunglasses worth between $150 and $300 apiece. >> they got away with a good amount. it's a violent forcible felony and they need to be found. >> reporter: one of the suspects then demands cash from the register. a total of $4,000 inside. but that wasn't enough. you can see in the video the suspect forces the store employee to open up his own wallet and demands the only $15 inside. fearing for his life because the suspects said they had a gun, the employee also hands over his cell phone. >> you have to treat it as a weapon there. you don't know. you have to comply. >> reporter: this is evidence police hopes identifies the thieves. >> it is unusual. usually they try to hide their fa

news 6 reporter troy campbell has been following the story for us and joins us live. what have you learned about this? >> reporter: the state attorney's office says once their investigators saw that video last week, they then went ahead and contacted the police department, and from there the police decided to suspend three of their officers. this arrest happening on november 24th of 2015. the three officers are all seen here in this surveillance video at the tropicana motel, walking a drug suspect. now, the problem is, officer hall, she testified she was alone in the room and no other officers came with her. the charging affidavit, officer hall said "the other officers were conducting a traffic stop." now this contradiction was enough for the state to drop the entire case a week ago today, letting the suspect walk free from this incident. now, all of the cases these three officers were involved with the street crimes unit of the police department which deals with a lot of investigative work, all of those cases have now been placed on hold. we're still waiting for the

troy campbell is live in the courtroom today. you talked with sanford police. how are they dealing with this? >> reporter: williams was being hold without bond. that changing this afternoon. after he appeared in court, now being held on $20,000 bond. with this little girl's death, we went to the police chief and asked him how does he intend to keep illegal guns out of the hands of convicts. >> i think that would frustrate any citizen who that someone who is a convicted felon and has a firearm. >> reporter: the police chief called the death preventable. >> if the weapon was secured properly, whether in a case or important part, if it was not in the child's reach, this child would have still been with us today. >> reporter: the chief says the law limits their ability to conduct searches based on suspicion, adding the department heavily relies on people turning convicted felons in to police. >> it's tough for us to break into someone's house and say we know you're a convicted felon. we know you've got a gun in here. we don't want to get into any scenario of that n
