whur's troy johnson is here with today's "talk around town." many african-american parents say they've had "the talk" with the -- the talk with their children of how to handle police. how are people framing the conversation now in the wake of these shootings? >> i remember my parents sitting me down. i sat down with my son at the same time. the conversation centers around how to engage police in these situations, make sure that it's constructive and make sure that you come out safe, primarily. but people are frustrated about having to have that conversation in these discussions lately, because they're optimistic that their kids can handle themselves if they're in an encounter with a police officer, but in the back of their minds, there's a palpable feeling that something could go wrong and they would love, really, not to have to have that kind of fear. >> so today we know about the president's meeting at the white house. yesterday in dallas he said you can't break the cycle of mistrust between the police and community unless both sides understan

whur's troy johnson is here with today's "talk around town." n lots of controversy, melania's speech, ted cruz's speech last night. how is this all sitting with your listeners? >> there's no question that been an unconventional convention, if you will. there's been a lot of fodder but not enough substance. they are disappointed in that fact. and they would like to see tonight the narrative really framed and the candidates really making some substantial statements as they pivot to the fall, meaning donald trump. some people are feeling like in these first few days republicans may have missed an opportunity to put their first step forward. >> well, as we've seen in the pictures last night and in primetime and in previous conventions, it's sparse when it comes to african-americans. what do your listeners say about that? are they surprised by it or not surprised? >> not surprised. but the number of black delegates in cleveland this year is 18. and that's less than 1% of the delegate population. those are some of the lowest numbers in history. past.
