truck driver fatigue is a leading cause of major truck accidents. these drivers who work extensively long days delivering the goods we depend upon, deserve basic protections allowing them to get sufficient rest to do their jobs safely and efficiently. just this morning, the national transportaion safety board released a report about a truck crash that happened on the new jersey turnpike on june 7, which killed one passenger flaflg a tg in a limousine and four others were airlifted to a hospital. six cars were impacted by the collision, between the truck and the limo. the truck driver, according to the ntsb report, had logged 13 hours and 32 minutes of work at the time of the crash. had he reached his destination, he certainly would have exceeded the number of federally permitted hours to work in a given day. the truck driver will clearly be punished for pushing the limits. truck drivers are extremely -- truck drivers are working extremely long days to deliver the goods that keep america moving, but it should never, ever be at the cost of safer roads

you can see a tow truck as well as the overturned cement truck with its wheels in the air in this oaklandls neighborhood. now workers from the towing company tell me the driver had been trying to back the cement truck up the road here and miss negotiated the downhill slope on one side of the road. and because the cement was top heavy that was enough to flip it on its side. we're told the driver suffered minor injuries. neighbors including the homeowner who lives here says they're glad no one was seriously hurt. >> the truck was flipped upside down. the cap was damaged and it slipped right on the corner of my property. some landscaping was messed up. >> i think this is like the second incident of these large construction trucks coming up here and trying to navigate these very narrow treats up here. most of these drivers come up here. they get lost in the hills. they don't know how to drive on the hills. >> reporter: workers tell me it took three tow trucks to get the damaged cement truck back up right. police say the accident happened shortly after noon and the road was closed for more tha

joining me now is former truck driver and president of real women in trucking, desiree wood.s for joining me. tell us what the experience is like to be a truck driver. is there pressure to drive long distances without adequate rest? >> yeah, the nature of the job is to drive -- you have 11 hours to drive per day. that's a really long shift. you're dictated by the government that you have to complete this 11 hours within a 14-hour time period. and you don't have the leisure to say i drove five hours, i'm ready for a nap. they're telling you when to take a nap, they're telling you when to take a break. >> the truth is, if you stop to fuel, once you contend with traffic, the long lines in the truck stops, the fuel bay, that's 45 minutes right there. so they're telling you to take this 30-minute break, but in actuality, you were tied upstanding in lines. you didn't ever actually get any rest. you didn't get a break. you have the company on one side telling you why are you stopping, why are you stopping. so you have all of these people on either side of you telling you, you've got

what about the trucking industry? it is evolving using automated technology.orking on semi autonomous systems to improve efficiency and the safety of freight trucking fleets. i'm joined now by the chief executive, josh switkes. explain a little bit about this idea of using sensors, technology, and sophisticated algorithms to really make the trucking industry more intelligent when it comes to driving tractor-trailers on the highway. >> my pleasure to be here. i think you described it quite well. our background, a lot of us came from the automotive industry. this'll have a larger and immediate impact. as you mentioned, it is about a $650 billion industry. this is 50 billion dollars on accidents when you look at insurance and direct costs and about $100 billion a year on diesel fuel. we saw that this same technology that has been developed for automobiles could be applied to trucks. that is exactly what we are doing with our system. >> tell us about platooning, what does it mean when it comes to truck driving and you have got to get the braking systems right, oth
