nbc bay area's david trujillo is in lafayette with the son who was instead ejected? damian. >> reporter: that's right. jake could not play in the next and deciding game. jake delaney is arguably the best pitcher and hitter on this lafayette club team. and that ejection means the dreams of a potential trip to the little league world series are now gone. virtually every ball he hits is roped. jake delaney plays for the lafayette 12 and under team. this is him wednesday night, getting the game-winning hit to give lafayette another chance at getting to the little league world series. they would need to win one more game. his teammates pour on to the field to celebrate. that's when the umpire runs toward home plate and signals that jake had been ejected, presumably for celebrating and throwing his helmet. >> egregious, devastating. not rational at all. >> reporter: jake's father is furious. he doesn't understand how an umpire can eject his son for celebrating after a game-winning hit. >> how one umpire can shatter the dreams of these kids on making an ejection of a player

in a story you'll see only on nbc bay area damian trujillo is live. what's the plan damian?reporter: five gang zones dhaer looking at. the first couple weeks in july have been especially troubling for police, and so now virtually every available extra unit will be out fighting gangs, including the s.w.a.t. team. welch park is where parents bring their children during the summer break. but it's also a park adjacent to one of the city's designated gang hot spots. >> because of the violence we have seen these last month and a half, something needed to be done. >> reporter: san jose police have identified five areas in the city known as gang zones. it's these areas that the department will focus most of its efforts in the foreseeable future, meaning even the elite s.w.a.t. team known as merge will jump in patrol cars to cruise the gang zones. >> some of the citizens in if some of these areas are in fear for their safety and kids' safety and quite rightfully so. >> claudia likes the strategy. anything she says to help keep her children safe. >> the idea is to saturate these areas

i'm damian trujillo live at police headquarters. the stress police are under coming up. >>> right now at 6:30 it's been an exceptionally violent weekend in san jose including murders, carjackings and rapes. >> today as the department tries to catch its breath police leaders are praising a department not only fighting crime but battling extremely short staffing. nbc bay area's damian trujillo is live at police headquarters with more on what officers believe may be behind the troubling weekend violence. >> reporter: the beat cops tell me it was out of control this weekend, speeding from crime scene to crime scene. but all the while, collecting valuable evidence. the crime tape was up all weekend long three separate women reported being sexually assaulted at knifepoint early saturday morning. police managed to arrest the suspect. they also caught a man who is suspected of a carjacking at evergreen park. >> this is crazy. i thought it was a safe neighborhood. i grew up in this area. >> we might want to leave right now. >> reporter: over

damian trujillo is live at headquarters with more. and a busy weekend, damian. >> reporter: yes. officers say they were a bit overwhelmed over the weekend. it started with that late afternoon homicide on friday and it was nonstop from there. detectives are still looking for the killers who took the life of a 55-year-old man near capital expressway and king road on friday afternoon. that was followed by another homicide the next day in another mobile home park. in fact all weekend long it was major call after major call. >> it was a very busy weekend for us. >> reporter: overwhelmed, is how some officers described it. but even undermanned and taxed. the assistant chief says officers answered the calls, over and over. >> we had over 24 contacts made 9 arrests, recovered one gun, two knives. most of those are gang-related incidents. >> reporter: among those cases, one suspect in a carjacking case in evergreens fowler park. >> i think that's crazy. like, i thought this was a very safe neighborhood. i grew up in this area. >> reporter: crime usually peaks during summer months. beat co

live in lafayette, i'm damien trujillo trujillo, nbc bay area news. >>> a woman lost custody of her-month-oldy after giving birth stranded in a forest. she told the harrowing story in june of getting lost in the national forest near chico after her labor pains started. she gave birth in her car to her daughter and alerted rescuers by starting a small fire. she tells a newspaper in chico that children's services has taken the baby in part, because she and the child tested positive for methamphetamine. she admits taking a small amount of the dprug to seek help. >>> small but a big problem in the south bay. the water district says ground squirrels are burrowing along the creek and damaging levees and embankments. not only that it's coming at a bad time. water leaders say there's a threat of el nino this winter and they need to be in good shape there. >> we think this channel, because of the flashy channel, it rises and recedes in a very quick fashion. it's most susceptible to such a rain event. >> it's going to cost $3 million to $5 million to repair that squirrel damage. crews expect to start t

damian trujillo spoke with one of the victims. damian they're telling a harrowing story, so frightening. >> reporter: it really was for the victim here on woodridge. bizarre events of twists and turns here on woodridge from the victim chasing a suspect to a child being in that suspect's car. broken glass still marks the spot where one of the two carjackings took place. >> i was holding the white car and knocked on the window. >> reporter: the victim didn't want us to show his face. he put this car up for sale on craigslist and got a call from a potential buyer. >> i told him we'll meet outside of lucky or in and out. then he said no let's meet at my house, maybe it's more safety. so i think in front of my house it might be more safe. >> reporter: the suspect showed up with a woman and a child. after going for a test drive, the victim says the robber took off with his car, leaving the woman and child behind. the victim then jumps on the car the woman arrived in breaking her window. that's when the carjacking suspect returned. >> he

nbc bay area's damian trujillo is live there right now. damian, who are they looking for and what crime have they committed? >> reporter: well it sounds like at this point that the -- what the sheriff's office here in this case they have what's called a marijuana eradication team, where they go out and raid illegal pot farms around the bay area. they scheduled one here on the east end of alum rock park. they tell us that when they approached this pot farm, they found three men, who seemed to be armed at this place. one of the k-9 units here from the sheriff's office was able to, i guess, bite one of those suspects and then that suspect was arrested. but two of them they tell me left that area and they are looking for those two suspects right now. they believe that at least one of them is armed at this point. this is a sheriff's office operation here at alum rock park, but they are being aided by the san jose police department. this is a city park. unknown at this point, if anybody, any shots have been fired here. this is quite an extensive

i'm damian trujillo. >>> it's a hot topic around the country. today, the sheriff responding to the request to change the city's sanctuary policy. all this comes after the death of kate steinle. police arrested an illegal alien for that crime. in a letter today, the mayor replied saying there needs to be more clarity of the sanctuary policy. he wants to have an open discussion with the board of supervisors. in part this tragedy spotlights the need for legal clarity at every government level. it requires an open and honest conversation about the legislative intent and meaning of san francisco's ordinances. >>> today republican presidential candidate jeb bash a bush arrived in the bay area to campaign in liberal san francisco. he didn't arrive in style. he arrived in an uber. you just saw a photo he posted on facebook. he was in town to speak at the tech firm thumb tack. jeb bush tried to show off his credentials as an innovator. >> reporter: that's right. he talked about his work when he was governor but had big praise for the tech industry. he fa

nbc bay area's damian trujillo has more on what you can do to avoid being the next target. >> reporter staffing levels and more brazen crooks experts tell me these are some of the reasons crime is costing san jose residents so much. >> this first time, they come and they go back. >> reporter: it's become an all-too-familiar sight, burglary victims eager to show us their surveillance video of a crime. jafar is just one of the latest victims. his store was hit less than a week ago, thieves broke a window with an elbow and ran off with about $1,000 in merchandise. >> i'm feeling very bad. the city's not safe. >> reporter: data we obtained from the california department of justice shows victims lost more than $47 million in cash and goods in 2010. that number jumped to more than $76 million in 2013. last year crime cost san jose victims nearly $80 million. >> historically these guys go in and they get things that are easily accessible and also easy to conceal. a lot of these guys are walking around with backpacks. they blend in with the community. >> reporter: at mojo burger a couple of we

damian trujillo is in san jose and singh appeared in federal court today?gh did not put up a fight in san jose. he'll soon be on his way to canada to face murder charges in the death of his wife. this is where federal agents say harinder singh had been hiding the glen mills apartments on fremont central avenue. >> i don't know. i don't know. >> reporter: most of singh's neighbors did want to talk today. we found one woman who was in disbelief. >> it is really shocking. is it true ? >> reporter: today singh appeared before a federal judge in san jose where he raised his shackled right hand and waved extradition back to canada. court documents show the 36-year-old disappeared in 2007 after his wife was beaten and strangled to death. he was on interpol's most wanted list out of canada. neighbors say singh blended in to the community quite well. so a suspected murderer was the last thing they expected out of their friend. >> you're shocked? >> yes. >> reporter: what kind of person is? you've seen him before? >> yeah. he's a nice guy. we met him in passing. >> r

damian trujillo joins us in san jose this evening where inspectors are finding some safety issues right there where you are. >> reporter: that's right, raj. sources tell me that the fire here was started by an electrical issue in the children's apartment. code enforcement inspectors were here earlier today looking and finding apparently more violations here. tonight a warning for some landlords in san jose as one of the victims here remains in critical condition. for the third straight day, code enforcement inspectors arrive at the apartments scene of the june 26th fire that sent a young brother and sister to the hospital. julio gomez remains in an induced coma to ease the pain. julio's friends miss the 10-year-old. >> he's been going through lots of hard stuff with his family and stuff. >> reporter: the city's code enforcement division says they found numerous violations at the complex, including missing or broken smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. they also forced the owner to replace 22 of the 40 stoves here. all apparently had sparking issues. today inspectors returned to conti
