damian trujillo. >> reporter: the outbreak is concerning for many people here in san francisco, but firefighters union says it will continue to keep the city safe. the alarm bells went off last week inside the san francisco fire department. reports that more than 40 firefighters had either tested positive or had to quarantine due to exposure. then the chief announced she tested positive and the number of positive cases has swelled. >> 90-100. some people are going off, some people are coming back on. >> reporter: nbc bay area has learned that in the days before testing positive, the chief had visited fire stations during christmas week as is kus mary to boost morale. there is no proof that the two events are connected. but it means more work for firefighters who test negative. >> have to stay at work longer to fill spots vacated by people testing positive. >> reporter: the firefighters union says it worries about fatigue. >> we make it work. that's what public safety's all about. >> reporter: but some

damian trujillo joins us now. sorry to be crude here, damian, but if you can, explain the flow, the process. we flush, it goes into a big tank, and then they take the samples, is that correct? >> reporter: it's very fascinating, raj. this is a process that's been going on for a long time. it goes into these waste water treatment plants. it's there for a couple hours and then it's shipped out to the bay when it's considered clean. but they want to get the sludge, the bottom of the pools that look like swimming pools. but it's full of sewage. they think they can get the most accurate testing results from there. so they open that valve that we showed you in the video. that one right there. they open that valve and dip a cup in there. and then they transfer that over to their own lab on site by alviso and ship it to stanford on a daily basis. that's how they know ten days in advance if there's going to be a spike, a decline, or it will remain steady. >> that is fascinating. that sludge is from all of our stuff. what a

in the south bay, damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. >> get a booster or get another job. that is the bottom line and a new vaccine mandate that went into effect today in santa clara county. it will require nearly all health-care workers, including firefighters, to get that covid booster. county public health department announced the deadline last month as covid cases and hospitalizations surge. and unlike some other mandates, the county does not plan to allow exemptions. that has been an issue for dozens of south bay firefighters in all but 42 firefighters are vaccinated. the union says if all were to be let go, it would create a public health safety threat with fire season approaching. >> it is very hard to try to bring back that amount of a workforce in time for fire season that's right around the corner. >> county leaders did meet with union leaders this evening, and tell us that they plan to ask the county to grant a waiver due to staffing shortages. this new mandate could cause. county executive jeff smith says the requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
