testimony focused on the smell in the trunk of anthony's car.entist testifying for the prosecution says that the smell and forensic testing showed that there was a dead body in the trunk as well as a high level of chloroform. in cross-examination the defense tried to debunk the scientist's testing methods. gary tuchman has more from orlando. >> reporter: casey anthony had little expression as she entered court on monday. and her poker face remained. even when this scientist talked about examining evidence from her car trunk that was put in a can and declaring he smelled death. >> when you first opened it, what was your reaction? >> i essentially jumped back a foot or two. >> did you immediately recognize the odor that was emanating from the piece of carpet in the can? >> i recognized it as human decomposition. >> reporter: dr. arpad vass is a forensic anthropologist with the oakridge national laboratory in tennessee. testifying for the prosecution. his words lay the groundwork for the picture the prosecution wants to paint. that casey anthony pu

this tree has been repeatedly damaged in the trunk here, at the base of the trunk. what you can see is that doesn't really look like real live wood. and that's because it is not. it is, it is deadwood, that has grown, the tree has grown around, it wasn't able to fully heal from the wound. the other things we're seeing, i don't know if you can see, but it looks like the tree is almost flat, when you look at the sides here, instead of growing thrike this, where you have -- you have a brord base. this hasn't been producing any healthy wood on the side of the tree for some time, that's a structural problem, what it means is the tree is, has deadwood there and is not producing live wood, it is potentially, that's a really high, breaking point. where the tree would have -- potential for failure. and in addition, the poor tree has had a lot of problems over the years. it looks like there was probably a low branch here that got -- maybe pruned off, but there's another branch here that probably got ripped off, what you can see is, the tree has a much easier time trying to, f

the defense brought in this whole new theory of the car trunk and the possible dead body in the trunk. today they brought in a forensic expert from the fbi. she told the jurors why she thinks that caylee's dead body was in that trunk based on a hair she found that had a postmortem band around them. let's take a listen to what she had to say on the stand earlier today. >> the hair in the swap was microskopically dissimilar to the head hair sample coming from caylee anthony. there were similarities found to a hairbrush identified as belonging to caylee anthony. >> reporter: so that was the expert there with some back-and-forth stuff between the state and the defense. >> a lot of this forensic evidence, defense attorney jose baez fought hard for it not to be admitted into court. why is that? he tries to say that it's not reliable, that it's junk science even. >> reporter: yeah, she's called this junk science. he's been fighting. right out of the gate today, he made another objection trying to stop this. the judge wasn't hearing it, though. the defense thinks it's not conclusive enough. t

that the hair that he tested that came from the trunk was a hair from a dead body. the hair found on caylee anthony's remains on the skull. that is crucial, crucial evidence for this prosecution. because it negates the defense theory that perhaps while there was a hair found, the hair didn't come from a dead caylee anthony, the hair likely came from a live caylee anthony. this expert said no way. this expert said in all of the testing that he has done during his career, a hair with that sort of postmortem root banding would only come from a dead body. >> this next piece of evidence really got me. the prosecution now focusing on this adhesive that was found apparently on a piece of the duct tape from caylee's remains. i want to listen to what the fbi expert found and then talk a little bit more about this. >> during my examination of q 63 an yououtline of a heart appear on one of the corners of the edge of that piece of duct tape. >> now we have a heart sticker on the corner of the duct tape. they didn't mention this during the testimony, but the court documents have
