i want to bring in trymaine lee joining us live from baltimore. his story that's developing now about what may or may not have happened in the back of the van, this has to be spreading through the community. what kind of reaction are you hearing? >> reporter: oh, certainly one part is disbelief. people from the very beginning didn't believe that freddie gray in any way caused his own injuries. many say they believe the police are kind of trying to see the ground and they expect that. but one thing i heard over and over again, freddie gray never should have been in police custody in the first place. they wonder why he was detained in the first place, being that from the report they said initially made eye contact and he ran off. so that's a problem for many people out here who are saying that the police routinely stop black people and young black men in particular for petty offenses. said we don't know all the facts, but we do know freddie gray is dead and he shouldn't be. >> you had to chance to go out on the street today and talk to some people. w

joining me now msnbc trymaine lee and msnbc national correspondent joy reid. joy, let me start with you. you're at north and penn and the shop behind you looks very quiet and serene. what's the latest there? >> it is quiet and serene. just a few police cars going by. mostly reporters. the drones are still overhead but no longer announcing the curfew is on and everybody had better leave. things have quieted down. there was a brief moment where some young men, involved in one of the protests that was very festive when it got started, lots of music and chanting. as it started to break up there were a group of people pretty big group who decided they were not going to go home. congressman elijah cummings came out, spoke to the police. we saw the police there, saw their truck. but no clashes between police and the protesters or the people out here. there was one skirmish that seemed to be between different groups of people who were out, one saying go home and one who didn't want to. but things are all back to i guess what you call quiet in a city with a curfew and

i want to bring in msnbc's trymaine lee. what do you see? >> reporter: how you doing, rev? so there are hundreds of people gathered here in front of city hall, and even in the midst of all the latest developments folks said we don't know what to trust until the investigation is final. one thing they said they do know, and they said over and over again, is that freddie gray is dead and he didn't need to be. so they go back to that origin no al stop. people don't understand what he was initially detaineed for in the first place. people say he made eye contact with police and ran from there. that is not illegal. their concern is more than what's happening now in terms of the leaks, like, why was freddie gray stopped in the first place. they still don't have clear, concise answers to why that young man is dead. >> i've heard over and over again, no one can go into the van until you first deal what happened when he was in custody? whatever happened happened while he was in custody and there does not seem to be a real answer to why he was in custody in the first place. >> reporte

msnbc's trymaine lee is among a large crowd of protesters who have marched from baltimore's penn station to city hall. and he joins us now. trymaine, do the people around you know there will be no public report or accounting this week, that the friday deadline is not going to be honored, at least the expectations everybody has had will not be met? >> i'll tell you what, chris, i'm not sure what the folks know about that as of yet. it's a huge diverse crowd of several hundred people. now we did march from penn station down to city hall. now crowd around us are marching back towards penn station. as you can see, it's a largely peaceful very diverse crowd. i'm not sure you can hear them, they're saying "all day, all night we're going fight for freddie gray". so the particulars may or may not be lost. some folks will come out here for different agendas, different motivations. some of it is about police brutality. some they're looking for direct answers to the freddie gray killing. but again, it's a large diverse crowd here. and one other thing to note. very scant police presence. we haven't

msnbc's trymaine lee joins me from north charleston, south carolina. you spoke with police chief driggers about this incident. >> a week ago today, before it happened. >> we're going to talk about that conversation in a second. i want to go straight to trymaine. the big reveal is about body cameras. the city of north charleston has 251 on order. >> when you think about what made this case what it is so far, the fact that it was all captured on video, we'd be having a much different conversation today if that incident wasn't captured on video. from a grant from the state legislatures, they got 100 body cameras. they're purchaseing 100 plus more. i've been around the block for a while. it was rare that a police officer is charged with murder. then for the mayor and police chief to come out and embrace their family in this manner that to me is almost as shocking as everything else. getting ahead of the story. this is somewhat of a ferguson effect. all the lessons learned. now they're getting ahead of it. they're paying for the police officer's wife's insu
