. >> reporter: at airports nationwide, the tsa's newest tool to protect the public. in just seconds, back scanner body scanners are able to scan a passenger for weapons and bombs, but to do so they rely on some of the same x-ray technology used in america's hospitals and dental offices. manufacturers insist it's far less radiation than you're exposed to simply by spending the day in the sun or flying on a plane. while the typical x-ray uses radiation to peer beneath the skin, back scanner technology uses just enough radiation to appear beneath the clothing, then bouncing off the individual it creates this chalk-like outline. at boston's beth israel deaconist medical center, vice chair max rosen says the cancer risk is roughly 1 in 100 million. >> you would need to have 1 100,000 of these cat scans. >> reporter: though pregnant women might want to avoid the scan. scientists estimate each scan emits rough ly the number used for radiation. to reach that, it would take 5,000 scans. >> the screening of people for explosive threats remains a vulnerability at most airports

i go home every weekend, so i have a lot of experience with tsa. frankly, i have been critical of the air marshalls wondering what the cost effectiveness of them. it would be like us having to have a marshall to take us from this room to the floor. after you have gotten into this building the building's secure. after you have gone through the airports, you should be secure. we have locked down cabins and armed cabins. i don't think in the christmas bombing it would have made a difference because the air marshalls sit in first class and that happened in the back. the committee asked for a report on essentially the cost effectiveness of the air marshall program. we have not received anything yet. in your request you want 85 million more dollars for air marshalls. i don't think our committee ought to give it to you until we get that report back. i just wondered if you want to comment on what we're getting out of that program. i mean, this is a priority of issues and while i'm a fan of law enforcement, i don't think this is the best -- actually, from w

i happen to know the tsa look to the health concerns and did an analysis of the exposure to the radio waves but i don't think the public at large knows that so if you could comment on both of those issues the two officers never overstep so the officer that is with the passenger never sees the image of the passenger in the technology and the officer that is viewing that image is located in a remote viewing room. the standards for the officer few of those images are very high. if they are not permitted to bring cell phones and to the viewing area they are not permitted to take a picture and most importantly, the technology is set up such that the operator cannot store that damage. they cannot copy it. they cannot transmitted electronically to another workstation so we have taken a lot of measures from the privacy standpoint to protect the travelling public. in addition the passengers are advised its optional if they do not want to go through this technology they can have alternative means of screening. the health and safety aspect of it were also very important from two standpoints. fir

the retired major general took himself out of the running friday night as head of the tsa. he faced tough confirmation struggle so he bowed out. harding's past as a defense contractor raised questions about his nomination for head of the tsa. caller: might take on the situation is that rather having the government subsidizing these situations where they come in with these programs, it seems to me that they should be gauging the monthly payments that people have. in certain states and cities, there's typically an average monthly payment. rather than subsidizing the situation which will just add to our debt, if they gave the people a lower interest rate -- a couple of years ago, they got a -- an interest rate of 6.75%. if they gave them 4.25%, they would be an affordable situation. if they stretched the loan at an additional five years instead of having a 30-year loan, hypothetically, someone's payment may go from $1,600 down to 970 and that whole situation is much more affordable. rather than letting the people off the hook on the principle which adds to our national debt, i

this was the way officials at the tsa said i think the white house was convinced of this that the united states is going to catch terrorists and keep up with them in the global information grid. this was the way we were going to do hot pursuit of the next attack a train to swallow all the information out there and hoarded and collected and cover all the bases. now not everyone who is involved in hunting terrorists were so convinced this was the right strategy. in fact, nsa had the program that they were very fond of using too trying to spoil the connections connections among these millions of dollars for connecting on a regular basis. he poured the information into a graphic tool that would display connections among thousands of people places and events of the series of lines connecting them. here's a picture of the bug of an unclassified version of these were displayed on screens and would literally take up an entire wall in the mouths of lions and connections overlapping were so dense to eye you can't make any sense of it. nsa was very fond of this. the skeptics people were out there t
