. >> and in fact the union representing tsa screeners says the shooting does show a need for armed security officers at every single checkpoint at airports. what's your take on what happened and what it should tell us about airport security? >> well, we have to review it. administrator pistole said he's going to review the procedures and all the airport police chiefs across the country have a great association and i know they'll be looking at it. here's the issue. there's two missions here. the tsa's mission is safe travel, to secure the aircraft and the passengers so there's no bombs, guns, you're not hurt when traveling. the airport police mission is to secure the terminal.

that i got tweets back from some tsa agents out there who disagree with that position and feel like one of them wrote to me unarmed sitting ducks but that's at least the unionosition, and to be clear, it's not like there aren't loads of armed agents running around an airport like that. there are 2100 tsa officers in lax and more than a thousand l.a. airport police armed and the dha with air marijuanas on board planes and also on the airport. so a lot of armed agents around. it the tsa agent's position to leave the shooting to them and they will do inspecting. >> we talked to tom blank from the tsa said to get them be federally sworn officers would involve another level of bureaucracy and training and cost and expense. mike brooks said lax held an active shooter drill recently. >> they did. three weeks ago in ontario airport, 30 miles from lax, 300 officers taking part in an active shooter scenario like this and the l.a. police chief said a lot of the officers who responded today said the training like that helped them to respond well to this incident, helps save lives, and it just shows you that they are conscious of this threat there. lax is a target of at

you have the tsa union now asking for guards at every checkpoint. a and homeland security have come out saying that's not an option, not the purpose of tsa officials. what is your response? is the answer more guns? >> first of all, this is like assuming that u.s. airports don't already have plenty of -- >> there are plenty of airport security people who are armed. let's get aside from that and get more to the question, why is it every time there's an incident at the school or hospital or military base or airport and it involves a gun, the answer is we should have more guns? it doesn't make any sense at all. the answer here is that we should be trying to make sure that if there are people out there who are unstable, we're watching for them and trying to make sure they don't feed themselves on propaganda that makes them believe that the tsa is out to get them. we need to make sure we're not demonizing people for very minor and selfish political and financial points and there are foolish people who believe it and take these ideas and murder somebody. th

the tsa's union is also saying one of its agents was killed in this incident and at least three others are injured. now authorities at l.a.x. are saying that, in fact, there were a total of seven injured, six seriously enough to be taken to local hospitals. the air traffic situation remains somewhat in chaos. but there is a portion of the airport at least that is open and to some degree accepting flights. but there has been a ground stop under way for much of the afternoon. we're about three hours into this incident. again, still trying to get the details. one more, public mass shooting, at l.a.x., involving a semi-automatic assault rifle. the suspect is either in custody or dead, beginning on who you believe. that's not clear. seven people injured. six taken to hospitals. we'll continue to try to sort all of this out. back to you. >> scott, thank you very much. want to go out to jane wells, who's stationed just south of l.a.x. there overlooking the runways. jane, i keep thinking about, it's a very heavily trafficked area of los angeles anyway, but when i read they close freeway exits
