what are you telling the people of tucson about this?ll you, i was here at midnight last night and there was a candlelight vigil -- maybe you can see it in the background. there were some 20 people. i talked to them and i think that what they are concerned about is what's happening throughout this community. the return of stability to the political process and the pain and suffering that people are going through, we have to come together as a community, as a city, as a state and as a country. i think that's what people are concerned about. maybe this is a tragic lesson that we are all trying to get our minds around. the return to civility is what people are praying for. they are praying for the people who are fighting for their lives. >> you talk about the return to civility. the sheriff talked about rhetoric in this country, about prejudice and bigotry in this state. is there a risk that there is a jump to conclusion that this may be the act of simply a deranged or disturbed person and not truly an anti-political act? >> oh, absolutely.

the shootings in tucson. i'm david muir. as we come on the air from the west coast, it starts as a routine exercise in democracy, a congresswoman in a supermarket parking lot, meeting with her constituents when it became a seen scene of chaos. here are the late numbers at this hour. 19 people shot, 6 are now confirmed dead, including a federal judge and a young girl bury 9 years old. the congresswoman is fighting for her life, and the suspected gunman, just 22 years old, is in custody, and authorities are not convinced he acted alone. they're actively searched for someone else. president obama called this a tragedy for arizona and the entire country. and there was this from the congresswoman herself before the shooting. my first congress on your corner starts now. please stop by to let me know what is on your mind. we have coverage with david wright. >> 10:00 a.m., the congresswoman was hosting her first public event of the year. she was standing behind a table talking to constituents when a man appeared and began shooting.

>> schieffer: ben tracy in tucson. tucson doctor steven rayle went to the shopping center where all this happened and where congresswoman giffords was holding an outdoor meeting. he walked up to a table where she was meeting with constituents. he told me earlier this morning what happened next. >> i noticed her. i noticed she was smiling and looked very relaxed. i walked around to the side of the table. and at that point, the shooting started. and continued. there was no pause in the shooting. he fired at her, shot her in the head, and then just continued shooting pointblank at the people that were around there. >> reporter: did he say anything? >> he did not say anything. >> schieffer: then did you help to restrain or hold down the shooter? i mean, what happened to him? >> a was a chaotic scene. i went over there at some point to see if i could help. there was only a couple people holding him down, so i joined in. put some pressure on him to stay on the ground. >> schieffer: arizona senator jon kyl is a friend of both
