in the spotlight tonight, new information on the tucson gunman.s department released close to 3,000 pages of documents about the tucson case. here is what we know now. before the shooting the gunman's family and friends said he behaved erratically. his parents were so concerned that they hid his shotgun and his father disabled the shooter's car at night. one of the gunman's friends told police he quote may have received a call last night warning of the shooting. on the day of the shooting, the gunman fired more than 30 shots before being tackled to the ground. police found two fully loaded glock magazines and a folding knife in his pockets. the shooter told the police, quote, i was the only person that knew about this. in response to this information, gabby giffords released this statement. the details released today regarding the shooting in tucson reaffirm what this country already knew, the mentally disturbed young man that shot me and murdered six should never have had access to a gun. joining me for an exclusive interview, two of the heroes f

two years after a senseless rampage in tucson we're learning new details this afternoon about what really happened the day congresswoman gabrielle giffords was shot. gunman jared loughner robbed six people of their lives and left a dozen more bleeding in a tucson parking lot. giffords of shot in the head and miraculously survived. now a new release of previously sealed documents sheds new light on what was going on in loughner's mind. >> the most haunting thing about the killer's face, that smile. we'll never know exactly what jared loughner was thinking, but today the pima county arizona sheriff's department released almost 3,000 pages of documents from their investigation. they paint the picture of a man who long ago lost touch with reality. loughner's parents told police he dabbled in cocaine and marijuana and that he once owned a shotgun. but upon advice of school administrators, after he was kicked out of community college for an inflammatory video he posted online, they took the gun from him and hid it along with an antique gun in the trunk of their car. his mother said her son neve

one is the tucson sector. and you say yuma has got it right. what does that mean, that there is operational control? can you explain what that means in layman's terms to the viewers out there? >> yes, i was in both the yuma sector and the tucson secotor last week and there is a difference. in the yuma sector, people still get through, but our border patrol and other agents have a reasonable expectation of catching them. that's probably the best explanation of what operational control means. you'll never stop everyone from coming through and you have a lot of commerce, legal commerce, that happens at the border as well. so when people talk about having a sealed border, weigh don't need a sealed border. we need a secure border. that's what we have in yuma. we're quite a ways from that in the tucson sector. >> and when that is done, that would trigger the pathway to citizenship? >> yes. first, we've got to get, as you mentioned, some kind of metrics from the department of homeland security. in a recent report that they had, increased apprehensions
