katha pollitt welcome to booktv in tucson. thanks for being with us. >> thank you so much for having me. >> host: when did we as a nation start having discussions debate about the issue of abortion? >> guests:oh well in one sense there has been a very long debate going back to the 19th century which was when abortion was criminalized. a lot of people don't know that abortion was legal in the united states until after the civil war in most states. then there was a big campaign against abortion and birth control and became completely illegal even to send information through the mail. it remained that way until the 60s. >> host: that when you say was legal was it because it wasn't illegal or was it specifically legalize? >> guest: it was not a subject of law. >> host: and nobody really talked about it are dealt with it? >> guest: into states connecticut and new york there were laws that are intended to protect women from dangerous drugs that people were using, herbal preparations but except for that it was pretty much no subject

i'm very happy to be here at the tucson festival of books. it's my first trip here, and delighted to have been invited, and very happy to have been introduced by jim cornell, who has, as he said has been friends of mine for at least a billion years. since we were talking cosmic terms here. so, as jim said "the accidental universe" is a collection of essays that explore how developments in modern science have affected our understand offing ourselves and our place in the cosmos. and i'm going to talk about the title essay, the accidental universe, and then read you a little bit from one of the other essays. until very recently, scientist believed that almost all aspects of the physical universe could be explained as necessary consequences of a small number of fundamental laws and what is a fundamental law? one example is einstein's principle of relativity, which states there is no such thing as absolute rest or absolute motion. that only relative motion has meaning. and from that fundamental principle or fundamental law einstein derived and qua

>> guest: he lives in tucson and so does my sister i served in the state senate eight years until she was term limited out the very place i served before her the issue was the county supervisor. she also had a life in politics the. c-span: there are a couple of images in the book if i read there rights of you and your father where they see the atomic bomb test. >> guest: my father and i we were rounding up cattle on the very date that the first atomic bomb exploded in new mexico. we were up at 3:00 a.m. for a roundup we had some coffee and breakfast in the kitchen and the window looked north. i was rinsing off the dishes at the sink and it must have been maybe 4:00 in the morning. and we saw in the north and little bit east an explosion on the verizon and a huge cloud go up. my father came over and we looked at it and we could not figure it out. he said i don't know. maybe it was the munitions dump or something like that. it wasn't and tell some time later when it became public knowledge that the first atomic bomb had been exploded at lowe's alamos. c-span: the cover of the book. than
