believe public colleges and universities like yours should be tuition free. [applause] also, i believe we have to deal with the crisis of student debt. orot of people who graduate leave school are deeply in debt. they have to pay off that debt year after year, sometimes decade after decade. that means they cannot afford a house, they cannot get married, have children. that is crazy. mentality change our regarding education. we should encourage and reward people -- i want you to get a good education. you should not be punished for getting a good education. [applause] people say well, that sounds like a great idea, you are a nice. how are you going to pay for that? us to another issue which distinguishes our campaign from secretary clinton's or anybody else's. we live in a country with more income and wealth inequality than any other major country on earth. the top 20 wealthiest people in america own more wealth than the bottom half of america. what we have seen as the middle class shrinking and shrinking while health care costs and education costs are soaring.

so they kept tuition really, really low. what happened around the 80s, 90s, was state legislators started saying, "we've got to build more prisons." in fairness to them they also started feeling more pressure because of medicaid spending because health care costes were going up. so they started cutting higher education budgets. and they made up for it with higher tuition. and that's why, at least at public colleges and universities, the costs have gone up a lot. now here's what we've done. the first thing diwhen i came into office was we reformed the student loan program because what was happening was on federally subsidized student loans, it was all run through the banks, and the banks were getting billions of dollars of profits forking inning these loans to students even though the loans were guaranteed by the federal government so, they weren't take anything risk. and we said let's cut the middle man out. let's lobe directly to students. that saved us tens of billions of dollars and allowed to us expand the pell grant pro

since 2002, tuition went from $1400 to today's tuition which is over $5,000. that still seems like it may be affordable for some, but for our immigration families, that is a really big number. our families are working families. our students are under a lot of pressure to have to work instead of going to school. what can your future presidency do for us? sen. sanders: this is an issue that i feel strongly about and it is an issue that the vast portion of the american people feel strongly about. here is what the issue is. it is a no-brainer. we live in an increasingly competitive global economy. and if this country is going to succeed economically and in other ways, we need the best educated workforce in the world. right? even if a student is not a recipient of that aid they feel the increases in tuition. so you see this tremendous increase in federal subsidies. one of our colleagues talks about how the federal government basically just shovels money out of airplanes at colleges and universities. significant spending on higher education from the federal level. so what it the outcome of this? have we seen college price goes down? you know, no. we have not seen college costs reduced whatsoever. since 1980, tuition fees at public and private universities have grown at least twice as fast as the rate of inflation, and as you just heard, average student loan debt now is $30,000 per student, and of course that's the average. you often hear stories how it's far greater than that for many students. and of course without obtaining a job in a solid economy that actually merits you having gone to college and obtaining that very expensive degree in the first place it can mean not being able to afford to buy a home, buy a car. hey hear about people putting off marriage because of their student loan
