for every moment in tumblr's history. the way the team works has changed hugely over the last 10 years. the people on the team have changed as well. emily tell me about selling to : yahoo! did you want to sell or did you feel like you had to? ♪ emily: tell me about selling to yahoo! how did you make that decision, how did the process start? how did you start talking to marissa? david: the conversation with marissa was a fun one. we were looking for partners for strategic investment. we were in the process of raising money. more than just having an investor come in and cut us a check. actually show up with some technology we can lean on. resources, distribution, content that could make our network better. there were a ton of things to do with yahoo! but also, with marissa -- her vision for what she was trying to do with the company was really aligned with what we were doing with tumblr. where we were going next and what we would need. the other thing was, in marissa and in her team we were spending time with, we found an u

those are built on tumblr.e launched the ability to take that advertising we're developing for the tumblr network, where you come to get the reach demographics and engagement of time on the network. you take that same content and roll it out the yahoo! network. >> i want to ask you about the cover edition. what do you think of what they are doing? >> they have done a lot of things that nobody else is doing. they are kind of on the other side of a fight we have been fighting. giving people more identity. create something that is theirs. one of the things that drives me bonkers about medium is they try to make it a commoditized network. with lots of long articles from various people rather than a place where i can set up and have my blog. they are doing cool stuff with longform text. >> what about facebook? >> we are all kind of vying for attention, but it is different. we found our spot in the big internet. the stuff you go to see on facebook and twitter is created by people you know or celebrities you wish you

tumblr.er about the future of tumblr after its acquisition in 2013 and here's what she said. >> we wanted to reassure people sort of the headline we wanted to make it clear we're going to operate tumblr independently, it's not going to change. there are going to be some things behinds the scenes be it search or discovery or pulling some of tumblr's content into yahoo!'s core properties but in terms of the way core tumblr works it's going to be in line with david's vision and road map and operate independently. >> jon fortt, some two years later is this going to be seen as a 180-degree shift or how do you look at this? >> i don't think so. i think these things always move closer into the mothership as time goes on or at least almost always and there probably is no more important strategic thing for yahoo! to figure out than what to do with tumblr. they've used it in other magazine-type properties, tried to sort of spread its social media aspects throughout yahoo! but it's got incredible reach,

marissa: tumblr continues to drive incredible growth.e continue to be aggressive with that platform. today, more than 350 of the world top brands not only blog on tumblr, but advertise and spend on the platform. most notably, we launched our creators network in q1 which lets brands find incredible tumblr artists and bloggers to commission unique content. we saw immediate traction with more than 35 rand spending on creators to date. emily: she has been making major acquisitions in this area. it's a key part of her strategy to get the company moving again in this post alibaba era. joining me in the studio is bryan womack, who covers yahoo! and paul sweeney of bloomberg intelligence. she is telling investors to be patient. how patient should they be? guest: you do have something interesting going on, it's just more of the same. the rates in growth are actually declining and when you look at the print, the core business is a big disappointment. you saw the stock selloff right away on that. emily: would you go that? big disappointment? paul:

in hindsight tumblr, that acquisition doesn't move the needle to yahoo.ried to do all things for all people. the share repurchases, the spins, the acquisitions. our point is view she probably hasn't done enough on the growth side of the business. >> mark, can i ask you for 140 characters on the most important thing to watch in facebook's earnings this afternoon? >> yeah. i think far and away, it the advertising revenue growth, this is going to be the toughest comp quarter that the company faces, during the course of the year. the over/under is going to be about 150%. if they can do 50% or more advertising revenue growth, that tells thaw street numbers need to move higher this year. we think there's a reasonable chance they can get above that level. that's far and away the best growth you can find in the large-cap internet advertising space. >> mark how important is it what they say about monetizing video. we've seen enormous growth in their video on their own platform. they've done acquisitions that would seem to suggest they're going to monetize that eve
