tumblr didn't exist. today these and other social media platforms reach billions, in turn creating thousands of jobs. at the sites and at companies building social media teams to connect with clients and get their message out. >> this is not a fleeting phenomenon. this is not a fad. it's not a trend. it's a fundamental permanent shift in how organizations and consumers depend on ea other and talk to each other. >> reporter: by 2020, forester research estimates u.s. social media spending will double from 2015 levels to $27 billion. professor gosh sees the spending leading to a host of new jobs in social media, from graphic designers to security specialists to data scientists. >> it's really a fairly wide combination of different skill sets. >> those different skill sets fetching different salaries. creative group says pay may range from $45,000 for a content writer up to up to six figures for an app developer or engineer. tumblr's in the market for engineers, product managers, and marketers. looking for wo

tumblr was a big play. as an early investor in tumblr, i was happy about that.hings you need. for verizon, it feels right. because i do think that some of the a.o.l. content things within the pipes that they're trying to create have brought them value. and i do think the individual pieces of yahoo! potentially could be quite valuable. emily: was tumblr really the right bet? guest: it was the wrong bet. it was the right kind of bet. tumblr ended up being the wrong bet because even at the time they did it, this is probably why even though i was a little disappointed, because i thought there was more room to go, tumblr missed their opportunity to go to mobile the way they needed to. a year or two earlier. and so i would say no. it wasn't the right bet. but it was the right kind of effort. emily: my interview with gary vaynerchuk. the digital media and ecommerce platform hype beast is enjoying the best debut of any asian i.p.o. this year. surging more than 700% in monday trade, the 10-year-old company started off as an online sneaker forum but has grown to include a

gary boehner check is an early investor of companies from twitter to facebook to tumblr. down with him, and asked him to test his theory. i began by asking about yahoo!'s him current predicament, and how much of it is marissa mayer's fault. gary: she has done a lot of things. the punchline is three years. that is a big ship. it depends on how you look at it, but i would say it is enough time. year one, year two, you are unwinding things. wall street-based companies have it different. the truth is, you are playing a game of 90 day terms. if i got to run yahoo! and i had my life to run it, i would be doing a lot different behavior. the pressure of what wall street wants hurts the ceos to do short-term behavior. it is harder for me to judge. i don't look at the wall street ceo, the way i look at a pre-ipo's ceo. emily: yahoo! is for sale, but she believes she could turn it around, if she had more time. gary: i agree. these are big companies. three years, big companies, it would be nice if they can have 10 years to prove it. but you don't. emily: verizon is proceeding with a

i think tumblr is a unique property.on't have a lot of insights into that that are not public insights. it's interesting because it's very different medium, even though functionally they're similar. you can publish, follow things. obviously what happened on yahoo! is a lot of visual content as opposed to bigger long-form content. so i think it's pretty unique. >> would you categorize it as a viable competitor to what medium is doing? >> it's a -- i would not say it's a direct competitor at all. there's not a lot of -- medium thrive force people who want to tell stories in words and pictures combined. and it's less about memes, short content and long content. they're very different audiences. >> is there future for medium in video? >> yes, certainly. you can embed video today. there's a lot of posts that include video. we can see ourselves doing more of that in the future. >> that's a big push for twitter, another company you are familiar with. today we got confirmation from the commissioner of the nfl that twitter will b

one acquisition did not pay off which was tumblr. that did not work out so well. they have written down a good chunk. the smaller acquisitions, i think that is a bit more open for debate. i think there is some truth to it. this is kind of how it is done in silicon valley. that was the strategy and it sort of worked. carol: does she get to keep the job ultimately when the assets are sold off? >> it seems unlikely. what is most likely going to happen is that yahoo! will be sold to a company like verizon. even in marissa mayer were allowed to keep the job, would you want to? she is a product person. over the next couple of years, there will be a lot of cuts and integration and corporate synergy. it is hard to imagine that she is the best person to do that or she would want to do that. it's much more likely she will wind up at a venture capital firm or a start up. she is very talented. i think this was a case of may be a bad fit. carol: you may have noticed the cover page. david: we asked tracy ma how she came up with the concept. >> we were visualizing yahoo!'s last

>> well, shawna started her tumblr about a year and a half before we began working on the book. so when it came to suddenly becoming a pop culture icon, i think justice ginsburg was initially perplexed and then amused. she said publicly that she had to ask her clerks, who is this notorious?
