after turbotax, used by 30 million americans to prepare their taxes, discovered "suspicious" criminal attempts to obtain refunds through its website. the company now working with state agencies, announcing tonight it is resuming electronic filings after a temporary halt. >> as an identity thief, all you need to file a fake tax return is a name, a social security number, and a doctored-up w-2 form. >> reporter: turbotax believes this was not the result of a breach of its systems. a government report now estimating refund fraud costs us more than $5 billion a year. experts warning tonight the scam artists are circling. on alert after that anthem health data breach put another 80 million social security numbers at risk. >> once someone has your social security number, they have an option on your life and they will exercise that option on your life at their convenience. >> this is nuts. if your refund is stolen, can you still get it? >> you can get it back, but it will make months or even a year of paperwork. the best thing to do, file early, get the return in. that's what the experts say

we have been downloading turbotax through the free file. we have had the best success partnering with vita. my emotions are coming out. out. anyone eligible for a product can do free fed and free state. free file is not about into it but different software companies. have you looked. my favorite story is from harlem. we had a taxpayer using turbotax. angrier and angrier and angrier. and we said, sir, if you don't like it, don't do it. he said no. i have had someone else do my taxes for years. is years. is this all their is to it? [laughter] >> people are afraid to do there own taxes. the idea that you could get audited, zero money break the law is very intimidating to people a lot of the reason they go to private tax preparer is that they trust them to get it right which makes that laurie-anne sayles story all the more tragic. we must make sure those folks are regulated. fear is very much a factor. a lot of our folks what we saw is they went to the one person in they're network who mastered turbotax and pay $30 to that person to help them.

meanwhile intuit says its sales of turbotax online is a 19% so far this tax season. desktop sales fell 7% after a price hike. now to the lead. it is apple versus a123 systems. they sued apple, claiming they illegally poached information. the case has been moved to a federal court in boston this week. how serious are the allegations? tim has all the details from the newsroom. this is really interesting area first, how serious are these allegations? just the notion these guys cannot take services, like lebron james, they move their talents to cupertino. >> access one of the beauties of silicon valley, the lack of a noncompete clause. this is something you see quite a bit in the automotive industry. it's not that unusual. what is interesting is the window into what apple is doing and it is the first concrete example they are trying to move into the auto space. cory: you broke the story -- they've got over a hundred people working on this project in cupertino. it's sort of shocking they have all these resources going after this. but i guess a123 knew. what's so important

let's talk about a turbotax breach. they had to shut down their site for a while.increasing number of fraudulent tax filings. how do you protect yourself over at liberty? >> you know, we have seen a lot of fraud in online, as people do phishing and seize identities. so what we do is, when people come into our offices, we do identity checks. we require, we require photo identification. so we have our own checks and balances. my 46 years of experience in income tax franchising is invaluable putting in checks and balances to make sure that people don't take advantage. we do a number of tests that help us insure that we don't get hit with the same kind of fraud. liz: i guess you could say that the administration is also playing offense versus defense, they called you and a bunch of tax ceo's to jack lew's office, treasury secretary. what did he talk to you about? did you find that useful? >> i was flattered that he called myself and the block ceo and turbotax, intuit ceo in and talked to us about how we could assist in the problem with them not being able to handle all

or worse, the upside of electronic filing and of turbotax and programs like that is that it can make it easier and things can go fast and so forth. the downside of those things is that anybody with enough money to buy a copy of turbotax can go out and say hey i can do your tax return for you. people who don't know anything of what they are doing. and people who deliberately create fraudulent returns a taxpayer him or herself doesn't even know about. there's a volunteer that is volunteering with the program this year who is in the irs in the enforcement division who is prosecuting criminal fraud. one of the very significant things that he is doing is prosecuting cases against prepares for basically prepared parallel returns. so as far as a taxpayer knows they are getting a return. they are getting the refund that they are due and then there's this return that's filed that's all fake it has a much bigger refund. and that refund goes into the repairs account. and so as far as the client knows they are finding the right thing. so anyway their prosecuting these people. but again as the se

. >> reporter: turbotax the do it yourself tax sft ware and website used by 29 million americans lastands of fake returns with other people's info to steal their refund. >> these scams can be very common around tax season because that's a loot of money out there that scammers can get. >> reporter: this morning, the fbi is launching an investigation into how fraudsters got social security numbers to file bogus state returns including through turbotax which temporarily suspended state filings last week after discovering the problem. but parent company intuit also warning of phishing scams asking for users to confirm their date father. >> once they have that information they can then prepare a false tax return and they will designate where it's sent and believe it it will not be to your bank account. >> reporter: they are reportedly happening across 19 states right no in alabama alone, 16,000 suspicious filings. minnesota halting its processing of turbotax state filings for 48 hours after a spike in victims there. julie hoy was one of them going to file her return finding out someone had
