. >> we'll cross to our correspondent on the turkey-syria border. that's just a few kilometers west of kobane. how much of a difference is this reinforcement likely to make in the battle for kobane? >> well, we're waiting to see how it's going to play out on the ground, but the sources that we've been speaking through from the syrian forces fighters who have been waiting for reinforcement for a long time tell us that they will, indeed, make a difference. you can see where reinforcement are stationed. it has the kurdish flag above it. that's where the iraqi peshmerga forces entered first before distributing them to different key locations. we just got of phone with one of the spokespersons for the kurdish fighters inside kobane who told us that peshmerga forces have taken up forces, and we have yet to use the heavy weaponry. there has been, offer, consistent fighting throughout the day with the sound of mortar shells and other explosions and fighting taking place. however, that has subsided significantly over the past hour or so. it has been quiet as

we have more from the turkey-syria border. >> we are a few kilometers away from kobane where the sound of sporadic fighting and shelling has persisted throughout saturday. behind me is one entrance through the town from turkey where the iraq kurdish peshmerga forces crossed over late friday and early hours of saturday bringing with them much needed reinforcements for the syrian kurdish fighters who have been combating isil. the peshmerga forces when entered stationed themselves mainly in the western part of the city. they brought with them semi pickup trucks that were essentially carrying heavy weaponry like anti aircraft guns and rocket launchers, bazookas and the like. these were weaponries that the syrian kurdish fighters belonging to the ypg and allies from free syrian army had been calling for several weeks to say that they needed in order to swing the battle in their favor away from the advancements of isil. as it stands now, both sides continue to hold the positions they held prior to the peshmerga forces entering with one side that is isil side controlling the eastern and south

now, i first traveled to the kurdish areas of turkey, syria and iraq in 2002. they are a people that have long been divided by borders, by linguistic differences, by politics and occupation and assimilation as well. a lot has changed in the subsequent 12 years. for instance, when i first traveled from the kurdish part of syria to iraq, i had to go by boat across this river. today there's a bridge there. and in august we watched this incredibly disturbing sight of tens of thousands of kurds streaming across that bridge fleeing the offensive by isis militants. on this trip we went the opposite direction into the kurdish part of syria and got an introduction to the syrian-kurdish fighters who have been fighting isis for more than a year. and what's very striking is how much women are playing a frontline role in that war and in the leadership of the kurdish enclaves of northern syria that have grown up in the midst of a civil war over the past three years. we see very much that gender equality is important there. and that's astounding when you consider their enemie
