progressive nina turner is backed by many house progressives. brown is backed by hillary clinton and the congressional black caucus. jeff zeleny joins us live from cleveland. a test of the democratic party's struggle at an interesting moment. >> john, there's no doubt. this is not a question of the democratic majority. whoever wins the primary tomorrow is almost certain to win the general election. this is a democratic district. but there is a question about the direction of the democratic party. are progressives going to see a moment here that they really have not seen all yearlong in other primary races across the country. we spent the weekend in cleveland. and i can tell you there is a sense of a reviving some of the old divisions going back to the 2016 campaign, you mentioned hillary clinton endorsing shawn tell brown, a council member here. nina turner, a familiar face a long-time bernie sanders ally. bernie sanders was out in force endorsing her. establishment versus progressive. and we had a flavor here of

turner: yes. well, i'm very confident. in our conversations with congressional leaders in the house and the senate, i come away assured that there is going to be action soon on federal voting rights legislation, both h.r.1, s.1, the for the people act, and the john lewis voting rights act, which will be introduced in the house in the coming month perhaps. so, we are very encouraged by that. what i say to republicans is, why are you so afraid of people being able to cast a ballot? if you're afraid of americans voting and you're afraid of people being able to exercise their franchise, perhaps you need to look in the mirror. and maybe you need to start talking to voters and talking to them about the issues they care about, and you wouldn't have to be so afraid of the voters. and, in texas, to tie it back to what reverend barber just said, because i just could not agree more, this is -- voting is the tip of the spear. this is intertwined with so many issues that are vital to people's lives. and my constituents in texas, right

i want to specifically ask you about the turner/brown race. in because this really is a battle between the two wings of the democratic party. >> that's exactly right, jonathan. the people i've spoken to on the ground really can't overstate how acrimonious and bitter it's gotten where you have a flood of politician money, luminaies in the democratic party and the movement, coming in and making their case against the other candidate. they haven't really seen anything this contentious in recent times, and i think a lot of folks there are quite unsettled by it and will be glad to have it over. that said, when that's done, i don't think you're going to have, regardless of who wins, a very clear answer about which wing of the party has the momentum behind it. it's a special election, and as you well know, most special elections don't draw very much turnout and neither side, the pro activist's left flank of the party and the leader in washington is going to concede they screwed this up and throw up their hands waving the white flag. i think we have 2

we saw it again earlier this week in akron, ohio, where you saw schon tell brown beat nina turner, who was a well-known surrogate for bernie sanders. we saw it in the virginia gubernatorial primary and we saw it in the new york city democratic mayoral primary where eric adams beat back a slew of progressive candidates. the bottom line is, at the ballot box we have an idea of what the base of the democratic party looks like. it looks a lot more like the democratic coalition joe biden put together. in congress right now, the base of the party is perceived of the progressives. the question is, where are democrats going to govern? govern towards that base in the electorate or the supposed base on social media and that they've seen elected to some parts of congress? >>> when we come back, more evidence that in politics, twitter is just not american.
