it was a 12 hours miniseries on tv which people had to actually tune in to follow the story. it beat out "gone with the wind." for the 1970's, 36 million viewers. that is a big deal when you think about -- now we have network cable and all sorts of tv channels. for all of these people to tune into one show and even for an entire week, even the other episodes are high in the 30's area maybe the first one was high 28 billion viewers. the rent -- million viewers. the rest took off. it struck a chord with people in the country at that time. it forced people to face the american past, dealing with slavery and everybody tuned in to watch it. black, white, you know immigrant, you name it. when we were processing the collection from reading some of the letters, the way he wrote it and made it -- i do not want to say relatable in the way that anybody could relate to be enslaved but the story itself. he really made it about family and family connections and what people would do for family and trials and tribulations. he just wrote it in a way that's really made people really wanted to
