you canalsotweet usat c-span wj. when you talk about the curbing of the prescription of drugs, that seems to suggest a wholesale change as far as the medical industry is concerned. how do you change the attitude? guest: it's a long time coming. the way this crisis started early in the 2000s is that physicians like myself were introduced to a new class of pain relieving drugs called opioids. we were told that these drugs have no addictive properties. they were kind to elevate pain as a vital sign in this led to overprescribing, which led to addiction. what really needs to change is a culture change among health care professionals. last year the cdc issued very important guidelines for health care professionals to make sure they are only prescribing opioids in select cases, usually for chronic pain. you should not turn to opioids as the first drug. a lot of education news to be done. most of this education is being called for voluntarily. what the commission has called for as well as the bipartisan policy center -- we
