u.s. navy with the 301 construction battalion. >> my talk today is about my road to japan. my world war ii road to japan. actually there were two roads one led by macarthur and one led by nimts. and as the old saying goes, never the twain shall meet. in this case never the twain should meet. keep that in mind as we get down the road and i'll tell you my experience at one of the islands. when i say road i'm actually talking about ocean. i think about it as if we were on a road and had rest stops. in my road to japan, the rest stops were islands that we had to take possession of before we could move onto the next stop. very similar to traveling on a highway. now, prior to the bombing of pearl harbor all the construction work for the services was done by civilian contractors under the guidance of the civil engineer corps. and that's an important point because after world war i the nations got together in what they call the geneva convention. and they agreed including japan, agreed to anybody that was in uniform and captured would be treated fairly civilly as a prisoner of war. but anybody who was captured in a battle kind of a sit
