for michael madoff and his wife, marianne, it's a grim reality. their son, tyler, has been missing for six days after being swept away to sea by a six-foot-tall wave in hawaii. the 15-year-old was on a hiking and kayaking expedition with a group from bold earth teen adventures, whose website says they provide teenagers with, quote, a safe and successful summer adventure. but tyler's father holds the company responsible for his son's disappearance, after team leaders from the company led the group into the bay after the department of land and natural resource officials warned the group that they were not allowed to hike or kayak in the area. >> the people from bold earth expeditions have shown poor judgment and extremely poor character. you lied to me to my face. and you know it. shame on you. >> reporter: in a statement to abc news, the owner of bold earth teen adventure says they did, quote, the very best they could under extremely difficult circumstances. the rogue wave swept five other people away with tyler that afternoon. all were rescued. one of them, anothe

teen swept out to sea are raising new concerns about the safety of teen tour groups. 15-year-old tyler madoffas on an adventure trip in hawaii last week when his group stopped along a section of rocky shore. that's when a massive wave swept nearly the entire group into water. tyler was the only one who did not make it back to shore. now the tour group is blaming local guides for bringing the teens out on the rocks. tyler's mother tells "today" show the accident should make parents think twice about where they send their kids. >> teenagers go on these teen touralize t touralis all the time and as we discussed, often, the groups do not check in with local authorities to run their itineraries. this place is not good, you shouldn't take 14 kids down there. we are just here really to make sure parents inform themselves better. >> the tour group bold earth has called the accident a "terrible, natural event." but tyler's parents say they have not received any apology. >>> still ahead on "new 4z midday" why your idea of therapy may not be what happens behind closed doors. >>> target's uptown deal. >>

tyler's parents michael and marianne madoff are with us exclusively.h of you. >> good morning. >> i know these are the worst possible circumstances and i appreciate you being here. take me to the phone call, 2:00 in the morning last thursday. that's when you first heard. who was on the other end of the call and what did they tell you. >> the owner of bold earth called our house at 2:00 a.m. and told me, your son is lost. >> at sea. >> no. he just said your son is lost. when i asked him what that meant, he said there was an accident and he had been missing for two hours. eventually when we pieced it together we realized he had been missing for five and a half hours. when then he tried to explain what happened, that there was a freak wave that came, obviously we were just devastated and hopeful. >> michael, i just want to make sure we understand this. your son went on this bold earth teen adventure. they were organizing the trip. as we heard in that piece they often subcontract out to local guide and tour companies, in this case hawaii pack and paddle. >
