about a year ago i met the actor and director tyler perry. tyler a couple years ago bought delta airlines headquarters in atlanta and needed to some its tv shows and movies. one of the amazing things about tyler and his story is a 1998 tyler was homeless and tyler perry searcy changed his story. i have kind of an unusual story myself. i was born in a small river town on the hudson, newburgh new york. when i was growing up, look magazine called it the all-american city and at that time we had kind of an inner-city, but then we had a lot of harm kids and there was an air force base of the schools will follow the inner-city and harm can and kids who'd been around the world. it was an interesting place to grow up. earlier on my father grew up in the newburgh poorhouse. it was called the poggi. my father's mother was a charwoman at the poorhouse come which meant she cleaned the bathrooms or the other poor people and they got a room there. so that was our background and that's why feel i should be the next president of the united states. and it's amazing to me that everybody, including tyler perry, has these stories about how one perp's small act of -- one person's small act of kindness was a difference maker for them. and it gives me chills to think that the biggest thing we actually do on any given day probably could be a small act of kindness to someone else. and so the vulnerability and fragility of life you really get to see up close and personal in cities like ours here in new york and ours in newark, new jersey, and how it doesn't take that much effort to be there for a kid. and i see, and i was very happy during sandy, we were able to do some things through covenant house and in cooperation with some extraordinary people that linked in to raise a lot of money because it actually doesn't take that much money to give a person a doorway of hope. and the last thing i'll say on this is, you know, for me i get very upset because when i first became mayor, i had a metaphor that i clung to. i used to tell people because i'm such an optimistic, hopeful person, i used to tell people, i'm a prisoner of hope. when we wal

the fact of the matter is tyler perry was an influence here for you.to your making this and what was the incentives and the notion behind it? >> we were making that film "alex cross." hanging out on set. it was a game changing conversation. he just rewatched brothers mcmullen and said, all right. mcmullen was successful. she followed it. very successful. both about these irish american working class families. why is it that in 15 years you never return to that milieu. i guarantee you the audience that loved those two movies are going to thank you for this. the minute he said it, i knew he was right. i sat down, opened up my laptop. i typed interior. didn't know where i was going. six weeks later i had the first draft. it was incredible. >> you want to stick with that niche. the flying barnicle brothers. >> i like it. >> based on a true story. >> because of that i started to work on a sequel to "brothers mcmull en." >> we'll see that. another great product, "the fitzgerald family christmas" is available now and will be in select theaters this friday. th
