a typhoon is closing in on southern china.hat means lots of rain and heavy wind for you in hong kong. let's turn to our meteorologist. >> very very wild setup. you take a look. the storm system sits about 200 miles or some 300 kilometers away from hong kong, southwest of hong kong at this hour. but this is the perspective. conditions beginning to improve as the worse of the storm has moved away. this morning we had some 30,000 vessels back into the harbor because of the rough seas. we had some 6,000 oil rig workers that were brought back by helicopters because of the approaching typhoons and 50 reports of trees coming down as well with wind gusts reaching over 100 miles per hour in some spots. 160 kilometers per hour, roughly 100 miles per hour right there. moderate to heavy rainfall in an area that is home across this region to nearly 20 million people. so this storm comes in as a category 1, making land fall very close and moving right through the gulf here. hai ph ong going to be impacted. notice it does quickly fall apart,

let's show you some of the pictures of the typhoon on the ground.spired, you can see the waives crashing in here, this thing really got going in the south china sea. in the philippines, more of a rain situation there, really got its act together over the next couple days. you see some damage that has been coming in. and the pictures have been certainly with us here over the last couple days. guess what, we have another one. this one has a name yet, but it will, i think. the chance of a development here, appreciate the spin here. the heavy rain already slicing off of the main feature here and impacting with the philippines, with the heavy rain, this position is terrible for the philippines here. pulls in that monsoonal moisture in the south china sea. you get a system here, and a separate area that gets going right over manila typically. as far as the forecast, we don't have a track yet. no advisories have been issued, it looks like this one will go a little further to the north than calmigi did with significant rains. this is just in the next 48 hou

as he pointed out, or, again, earthquakes, typhoon, hurricanes. there's no defense against that. so, i'm an optimist in that regard. i you have the will, you can defend the planet against asteroids. you can't defend it against exploding volcanos. you just can't do it. so, in a way we are sitting on a powder keg. >> host: have you thought about, like, -- okay, we put some people -- we put neil and buzz on the moon and if a volcano had gone off while they were there they other would have been in bad shape may. have been able to make it back to the pacific ocean but maybe there wouldn't be an aircraft carrier to pick them up or something like that. so, talked about saving the earth from asteroids. how a big project is keeping enough people alive on the moon? and by the way, this is something that i'm willing to entertain because this is what i wrote about. but what do you think? >> guest: in terms of a colony on the moon? >> host: yes. >> guest: it's a no-brainer. spread out or die. and, again, will cost a huge amount of money? yes. what is your life worth? >> host: yes. you're thin

the outer bands of the typhoon edging away. in the early morning hours we had 600 flight cancellations. cancellations and delays, i should say. some oil rig workers brought back to the shores because of the dangers being offshore. 30,000 vessels were called back. there you see people out on the roadways. and the perspective again, there's hong kong. we have winds about 130 kilometers per hour which makes it a category 1 equivalent. they are not categorized numerically, but a population of about 9 million people. one of the prime tourist destinations in china and that area getting torrential rainfall with it 2 million people in its path. a lot of people stand to be impacted by this. look at the winds. some of the higher elevations, 160 kilometer winds. that is about 100 miles per hour. and the system going right into haiphong. so this storm system, although a category 1, as you can tell with what happened in portions of hong kong, had a large scale impact. let's take you across south central china. we've had torrential rainfall

. >>> the typhoon has hit china's most southern island. 90,000 people have been forced to leave their and seek shelter. the typhoon is now heading to vietnam. >>> on thor side of the world, tropical storm odile is springing storms to mexico. >> the winds are winding down so that is a good sign, but in terms of the amount of rain, we are looking at widespread flooding over the next few days. it's the strongest storm to hit the baja peninsula in over 100 years. you can see the huge massive cloud coming in. it's making its way up the spine of the peninsula, it will gradually push its way towards the southwestern corner of the united states. sustained winds of around 90 kilometers an hour. it will weaken smartly as it goes across the land. but in terms of the rain we are going to see copious amounts of rainfall coming in across the region over the next 24 to 36 hours or so. you can see the kind of damage those strong winds brought in, just through the course of sunday and monday. very, very strong winds. the equivalent of a category 3 storm. it did bring down power lines, street signs. it
