ellison: absolutely, the way that the memphis police department responded to tyre nichols i think was an excellent response. it was a tragic situation, one that no one would ever want, but given that that tragic incident occurred, you saw the chief step up, released information quickly . the investigation was swift. a lot of videotape got released after the officers were able to review it. i think that is the example of lessons being absorbed, learned. i also will tell you i think you have a lot more police officers who will stand up and say, " that is wrong," which is very important. we have got to have a situation where officers feel comfortable saying, when they see something that is not upper and right, that there is enough that they can stand behind. that is another thing we have seen more. we have seen local governments respond. in minneapolis, we have had the city council and mayor has a policy for no-knock warrants, joe called and things like that -- choekholds and things like that. we have seen a lot of action on the local level. we still need to see more on the federal level

you so well prepping notes for our talk last week news broke out of memphis of the killing of tyree nichols at the hands of a group of police and that it was a group as opposed a lone actor. it raises more questions of culture and systems. if you were to fly out to memphis today to out what happened and how to fix it. we're one of the first things you would do well, first off, in terms what happened, it's quite clear memphis. like many that have a high crime problem, oftentimes will rely on a unit to focus on that particular problem. memphis problem was a combination of murders, shootings. it was the most violence city in america in 1920 and 21 and in 22, probably will keep that title. unfortunately for them. and it is minority majority city population, 70% black police department is almost 60% african-american and and its issue is very similar to many other cities around the country. it banding not declining rates of violent crime. so oftentimes cities will seek to form specialized units, oftentimes task forces with federal agencies to focus on those individuals who are committing crimes.

when i think about the tyre nichols case, we've seen this before. and if, in fact, the problem is that we keep seeing it over and over and over and over. and part of the reason is because with we want to tell this lie about what america is, who america is, right, how america has acted. and as long as we tell the lie, then the truth can never be dissolved. and i wrote this book because i wanted to just for the first time in many ways, i wanted to tell a a level of truth that i d never spoken publicly before. and it is in this book. it i is in this book. it's in this book. so i'm going read a little bit from a couple of things, and then we're going to talk some. this book has several essays in it. one of these essays asks the question should we keep or should we dissolve the black church. [inaudible conversations] >> well -- [laughter] dismantle it, throw it away or is it salvageable, right? another question asks will we ever get too the place where we believe that black people are beautiful? not we can get beautiful when we get dressed up. but can we

on an interim basis and push for issues like gun reform, abortion, police reform coming off the tyre nicholse in the state as well. these are two of the only people of color, youngest lawmakers there, so they have a coalition, a really young group of folks behind them who i think are eager to see them back there and representing that sort of part of tennessee, their voice. >> as you know, an off year election, it's tough to get people out, a special election, forget it, but are they feeling pretty confident because they have gotten so much publicity, and because there were so many people who felt empowered by what they did that they are going to get the turnout? >> absolutely. that's a big part of it, the level of publicity, the way in which young groups and organizations have come out behind the two of them in recent months, but there's also just the logistics here. representative jones does not even have a primary challenger on the democratic side right now. pearson does, but if he prevails, it's all but, you know, a sure thing when august, the election comes around. >> i know you'll follo

it will now be known as the tyree nickel skate park. nichols was an avid skateboarder and growing up in sacramento frequently went to this park. he died back in january after being severely beaten by memphis police officers. the light and the love of skateboarding as well as just his human nature to see the good in people and to see the light in people. his smile. and then for the younger kids that are coming up to really see the example of what it means to really pay it forward, to honor his memory, to honor what he stood for, and hopefully inspire them to continue that. along with the renaming of the park, multiple organizers came together today to renovate the park in his honor. former president trump is scheduled to make his first court appearance in court this week tied to his new indictment. prosecutors say he mishandled classified documents. fox's jonathan sara reports. the case , though, is not keeping him off the campaign trail. as far as the joke of an indictment, it's a horrible thing. it's a horrible thing for this country. donald t
