we're joined by the attorney for tie re tyre nichols' family ben crump. his family was in court as the five officers pleaded not guilty. first off, how is the nichols family doing? >> as ms. wells entered court she feels numb knowing she's going to be in the same room with the people who murdered her son and she was like in a nightmare but she was doing her best because she wanted them to look at her in her eyes. that's what she wanted because she said without yelling or screaming at them, looking in her eyes, she was going to be asking them how could you do this to my son? >> it took a tremendous amount of courage for her to go there and be there in the same room with those officers. let's turn to the decision by all five of these former officers to plead not guilty to these serious charges. what do you make of that? >> pamela brown, we expect that that, you know, is the process. as we are champions for civil rights of everybody, you're innocent until proven guilty in the court of law so we want those officers to be able to have their day in court but we

at no point in the video that we have seen so far do we see tyre nichols go for an officer' weapon or side holster or anything like that. this report then goes on to say that first scene a chemical agent was deployed as well as a taser, but nichols, they say pulled the taser probes out and ran away. we do see that in the videos. next, this report describes that second encounter where we saw the most egregious beating take place. in terms of that spot, that location, it says while officers were trying to detain nichols he was actively resisting police by pulling duty belts and grabbing one officer by his vest. it says a chemical agent was used again and that one office used, quote, his department-issued baton while attempting to get the suspect, tyre nichols to comply. what it does not mention, chris, is that officers repeatedly punched and kicked nichols. it makes no mention of that, and that is incredibly apparent in the video we have seen from that night. it also makes no mention of the fact that when they were doing that, tyre nichols was handcuffed, and at one point being held by

police officers pleaded not guilty to second—degree murder — and other charges — in the case of tyre nicholsn, died after a police beating in memphis, tennessee last month. videos showed the officers repeatedly kicking and punching nichols in a traffic stop close to his home. the five officers, all out on bail, entered their not—guilty pleas during an arraignment hearing in shelby county criminal court. tyre nichols�* mother made this statement outside the court. i know my son is gone. i know i'll never see him again. but we have to start this process ofjustice right now, and i want each and every one of those police officers to be able to look me in the face — they haven't done that yet. they couldn't even do that today. they didn't have the courage to look at me in my face after what they did to my son. so, they're going to see me at every court day, everyone... exactly. — ..until we getjustice for my son. i'm joined now by barbara plett usher in washington. we just heard from tyre nichols's mother a lot of emotion and the judge emphasising that the accused have a right to a fair trial. is

and to hear from the family members of tyre nichols, as you point out, so poignant. seeing the mother up there so emotional honoring her son and tyre's brother, who said he didn't want to speak. he hadn't planned on it. he got up there to speak and he talked about how his brother saw life through a different lens than perhaps others in their community. it really touched me. you know, his photography. he was a skateboarder. he had this really full, rich lifer that now is taken away from him so earl early. >> to think of the manner of his death. we have both recently lost close family members. we would not want to be in front of cameras or having to deal with it publicly. you did not hear any vitreole from family members, simply recounting what they loved about their brother, their son, their loved one talking about the changes that they wanted but not calling anyone names. i also found it very heartwarming and i'm not sure i could have been the same way for those family members that are saying they in some way can forgive what happened but they won't forget. the mother
