, you've had enough preannouncements by industrial heavyweights like caterpillar, federal express, u.p.s., norfolk southern that the expectation is already for negatilecative earn. if we can beat expectations, that will be good for the market. >> scott, how do you see it here? everything's on the line, is that how you see it? are we making too much of that? >> scott, one thing have you to remember. laggings -- earnings are a lagging indicator and the market is expecting lousy earnings comparison. a little negative, a little positive. fourth quarter earnings are probably too high. consensus earnings estimate for the full year, mainly because of the fourth quarter, are too high. really the market has very low expectations coming in here. these ceos will not be pounding the table saying, hey, we're going to do great. with an election, the fiscal cliff, uncertainty over chinese groeshgts what's going to happen in the middle east. no way these ceos are going to step out on the ledge and give us rosy outlooks. >> you talked about guidance, josh, and how important it's going to be. how much do

>> we're watching a big name that's coming out with earnings this week is u.p.s. they went from 1.20 now 1.06. that's a big leading indicator for consumers and what we're expecting for next quarter and how we're buying. >> they already said they were seeing a slowdown worldwide. fedex was saying the same story. what makes it attractive to you right now? >> it's down 4% for the year. it has a nice dividend. they have a couple companies they're taking over on their plate right now. that's a great company to turn it around. >> has anything changed in the fourth quarter? i know for a long time we were talking about third quarter earnings looking at a contraction. that's what we're getting here. then you were expecting the fourth quarter to see a rebound. are you still expecting a rebound in the fourth quarter in earnings? >> we're still hesitant. for second quarter we had a similar story. initially most of the companies in the beginning had more disappointing results. by the end of the second quarter we did okay. it was a slightly positive quarter over quarter. it's s

we've heard from major companies like 3m, caterpillar, dupont, all these companies, u.p.s.come out and said the global economy is very uncertain. it's slowing down a little bit. they're not sure about what they see in the future. and it's raised a lot of questions in the market too. the market's been selling off over the last week or so. real concerns, people sitting up and saying, uh-oh, maybe there's something really happening here. do you think the market's overselling this situation? or do you think it's catching up with reality? what do you see? >> well, i think stock market generally is the best place to have money. but i think that there's no question that worldwide there is some slowing downgoing on. and in the united states, actually residential housing is picking up and we've been waiting for that for a long time. and it hasn't gotten to any big level yet. but our carpet businesses and brick businesses and all of that will come on with residential construction. and that has turned. and the general economy, i think it's better than the u.s., certainly better in the

a lot of analysts -- another one i should mention, do you remember the u.p.s. announced the stock surged and it's been in a negative trajectory. reporting next week the european union will say it breaks anti-trust rules. they will have to make concessions in order to get that through. and let me finally come back to this main question of when spain will ask for a bailout. a report i thought was really interesting and caught the mood if you like of where we are at the moment. it comes from jpmorgan who was suggesting that you may not get any formal request from spain now until next year. he goes to the timing and the calendar. it could be right into next year that actually they apply some assistance and it ultimately comes from the ecb, eventually they believe they can ride out the pressure for now. chasing this 10% to 20% chance they don't need the bailout down the line. and he's pointing out you have as a result of the announcement from the ecb it might buy bonds big time down the line. the rates are low. another thing, germany, you've seen this over the last
