u.s. supreme court. if you want to live a short life, retire from the u.s. supreme court. so justices have tended to stay for a very long time. my favorite quote from thurgood marshall toward the end of his tenure. he was interviewed by the "washington post." they asked him if he planned to retire any time onime soon. he was in his 80s, he said absolutely not. he said i was appointed to a lifetime tenure and i intend to serve every single day of that. not only that, i plan to be over 100 years old. not only that, when i finally die, i plan to be shot by a jealous husband. that's quite the aspiration. nonetheless, he served on the court for a good, long time. of course longevity in general has dramatically increased lifetime tenure. at the time of our nation's founding, the average age of appointment of a supreme court justice is about the same as it is today. it was age 50 at that time. however, life expectancy at that time was in the 30s. so the average age of the appointee was older than the average age of death. so that the logical explanation would be -- lifetime tenur
