i just got off the phone with u.s. navy officials. it seems aaron alexis was an active duty reservist, that means he was full-time working as an aviation specialist out at fort worth at the naval air station there until 2011. the navy at this point doesn't know why he left the navy at that point. he did not deploy overseas or serve in combat, did not serve in the war zone. he was working as a simple electrician at the naval air station until 2011. he was in the navy about five years. now, we also are receiving some reports from fort worth, texas, from people that knew him in fort worth, texas, that said he was a buddhist and recently just traveled to thailand and served as a delivery man at one point at a thai restaurant in fort worth known as the happy bowl. there are interviews with people at the happy bowl that say they can't believe this is the aaron alexis that they knew. he served as a waiter there at times. he told them that he got out of the navy, according to the report in the fort worth newspaper, he told them that he got out

shooter, 34-year-old aaron alexis, was involved in eight instances of misconduct while serving in the u.s. navy. he had been arrested at least three times, two of those incidents is involved guns. yet, he was, after all, honorly discharged from the navy reserves back in 2011 after what the navy described as "a pattern of misconduct." authorities say all 12 of the people killed were civilians or contractors like the shooter. none was military personnel. police just released the names of all of the people killed. they ranged in age from 46 to 73 years old. we're piecing together everything we're learning about the gunman and also seeing quite a contrast. a man who studied languages and meditated and a cold-blooded killer. pamela brown has details on the investigation. >> reporter: law enforcement officials say 34-year-old i.t. subcontractor aaron alexis entered navy yard building 197 legally, but the valid military-issued i.d. and an intent to kill. his motive unknown. >> we're looking to learn everything we can about his recent movements, his contacts and associates. >> reporter: a picture is em

hood, but let's focus on what happened yesterday at the u.s. navy yard. he didn't work at the u.s. navy yard every day. he worked in many different places. so why choose this particular place? >> well, access -- many crimes are based on a few things and one of them has to do with availability, access, their anger level at this particular time. did someone or something actually trigger this event for him in recent days? and the most dangerous person at work -- i teach this both at the fbi and the american college -- that we interact with in society is called a grievance collector, what kind of grievances did he have? so it is unclear right now, but that's why investigators will be very thorough in trying to determine, was he angry with the navy yard? was it with his employer? or was it with any specific people? right now it does not appear that it was specific persons. he wanted to make a statement. the question is, what was the statement and yes? >> but if this is a case of workplace violence, it would be very difficult to determine whether he was dangero
