talmage boston, stopping at the u.s. navy memorial before the casket then is put on a horse drawn carriage for that final leg to the u.s. capitol. tell us about the significance of stopping at the u.s. navy memorial. guest: when you think about it, as i said, he was in the navy for 10 years. president of the united states for only four years. he was in washington, federal government only four years. he absolutely, i'm sure he and rose lynn -- rows lynn and his family -- rosalynn thought about how he wanted this to be executed. his going to the naval academy and spending -- having his body stay there and special ceremony and so forth, when you look at his lifetime priorities. the years he was most proud of, that he wanted to honor the most, this is how he would have wanted it. i don't know he was particularly happy as president. there was obviously a lot of people who did not go along with his wishes. there was a lot of friction as i mentioned within his own party as well as nationally. but i think his years in the navy were a

u.s. naval academy. >> yes, that was a very important part of his life. when he was a boy, he didn't want to be president. he wanted to be an admiral. his uncle was in the navy a young age on attending the u.s. naval academy and he read the manual, but tell you what he needed to do to get in and he realized he needed more weight, so he ate a bunch of bananas, so he made sure he met the weight requirement and a whole series of other things. when the naval academy, the graduates 39th out of a class of 650. when he is trying to get into the most elite program in the navy, a famous program that runs the cold war and developed nuclear powered submarines that soviets couldn't match. he was trying to get into the program and asks him, did you do your best? he thought he had. d. he wheeled around in his chair and said, why not? this was in 1952. carter thought, i'm not going to get in. he respected his honesty. from that day until the day he died, you did -- he did his best and everything which is with the nobel prize citation included. >> i had the great honor perhaps a decade ago of mana meeting is cannot nominating a panel of nobel peace winners. jimmy carter was

a motorcade is heading for the u.s. navyin downtown d.c., where the coffin will be transferred to a horse-drawn wagon. it will travel down pennsylvania avenue to the u.s. capitol, escorted by the military pallbearers. we are expecting a short service this evening at the rotunda, which president biden and the first lady will not attend. it will be senior members of congress, the family, and the vice president who will deliver the eulogy. the body will lie in state for two days for public viewing. with me tonight, the former u.s. ambassador and longtime middle east envoy, the u.s. presidential historian laura smith, and joining us from capitol hill, political correspondent and north america correspondent gary o'donoghue. let me start with you. as we watch these pictures of the motorcade making its way to washington, jimmy carter was a very humble man. did not always warm to the conventions in washington. it was one formality he could not escape. a day that had been in the planning almost since the 1980's. >> that is right. som

this is his stop again at the u.s. navyvania avenue as he see the carter family they are gathered. this is right on the path on the way to the white house where the inauguration parade would lead. on his inauguration day in 1977, jimmy carter surprised the crowds because he jumped out of the car and walked with rosalynn almost the entire way. that started the tradition of presidents jumping out of the vehicle and doing at least some portion of pennsylvania avenue on the way to the white house walking with the crowd. he wanted again to be that message with that people. his walk was a lot longer than we've seen in recent inauguration is. he becomes the 13th president to lighten state inside the capitol rotunda and he will be, the casket we'll be put on this kind of flock that is basically a pedestal for the casket that bore abraham lincoln after his assassination in 1865. so think about the tradition, the honor, and what we are looking at here as far as a country saying goodbye to one of it's leaders. >> absolutely. and this
