the uc-eligible, in order to get into uc, you do need to have c averages. and so the chart on the left shows the students who are in each of the categories, having achieved the categories a-c. so we have a total of 4024 students who are currently juniors. 2216 of them are on-track and they have passed the classs that we would expect them to pass, and have met, like the english, the science, the social studies, the pe, in order to be aligned to the uc requirements. we have another 1319 students who have 110 credits, but they are missing one of those benchmarks. and again, that benchmark could be that they failed one semester of pe, they failed a math course. it could be that they are an english-learner and haven't yet had the opportunity to take their core english class, because most of the beginning english learners take those classs in junior year when they have to double up. then we have 296 who are in the moderately -- ho who are in the off-track, those below in the credits who have done to 80 credits and then you see the numbers for the moderately off-t

we have been able to grow the tech industry thanks to uc berkeley, and the bio tech thanks to uc sf and san diego. and we need to continue to invest in our future and investing in education and investing in uc, and making sure that those intaoutions are protected. i think that government needs to step out by making sure that we are not being overly burdensome. i think that we make the citizen and businesses go to too many places at times. i think that there is a significant amount of bureaucracy that could be cut. >> you mentioned that education is one of the things that government has to be responsible for. >> california used to have a education system that was the envy of the system how do we get it back >> we get it back through funding it. from kindergarten to my time at uc berkeley, i just started dropping off my daughter at kindergarten this year and i am concerned about the state of public education. we fund our kids about $8,000 per pupil that feels like a lot of money, compare that to new york, new jersey, massachusetts, and you are talking anywhere between $14,000 to $15,000.

uc students are starting to arrive in san francisco to try and stop the wave of tuition hikes. the regents reveal today more hikes could be coming, despite last week's passage of proposition 30. nbc bay area's jodi hernandez is live in san francisco to explain. jodi? >> reporter: janelle, this is the last thing students thought they would have to do after helping pass proposition 30 last week. yet here they are. students say they will camp out here overnight in front of the uc board of regents meeting to take a stand against tuition hikes. you can see they're setting up their tents as we speak. this after the uc board of regents unveiled their budget framework for next year, a framework that includes the very real possibility of tuition hikes. governor jerry brown made a rare appearance at the meeting today. uc regents told him that they will need more than $276 million from the state to keep tuition from going up next year. the governor says that is a sum that is simply unrealistic. the members of the regents finance committee voted to accept the budget framework, but students

disrupted the uc regents meeting going on here. you can see officers still standing by, barricades still set up. demonstrators are angry over a proposed fee increase or multiple fee increases for students already factored into next year's budget. >>> a group of about 100 protesters, most of them students were kept behind barricade this morning after they cleared out the room. about a dozen proterses stood up and shouted and were escorted outside. the meeting dealt with next year's budget. it did resume later. protesters say they want the regents to drop plans for any new fee hikes. >> the state of california is not broke for education, the money is just being poor leal lo indicated because it makes mofny for the regents in there. >> one fee that has been discussed of late would target graduate students working toward professional degrees at awe c school. but on the governor's recommendation the regents have delayed a vote on that particular fee increase, the governor felt it was just the wrong time after prop 30 passed on election

chris and i have been friends since we pledged the fraternity at uc berkeley in 1978.to first thank chris's family for allowing me the honor of speaking today as we celebrate chris's amazing life. i look at this crowd. i try to figure out how much he achieved so much while making personal and professional connections and lifelong friends all over the world. this beautiful light-filled rotunda is the perfect seting to celebrate chris's life. he was a true renaissance man and offered a lesson in modern day enlightenment to all he met. some say don't sweat the small stuff. chris was successful because he did pay attention to little details and common courtesis that showed the world that he cared. i think the roots of chris's enlightening character were evident when we were undergrads at cal. i would like to share examples. first of all we will start superficially on the topic of fashion. chris like many of our pledge class was from piedmont. i recall thinking what is up with piedmont. the khakis, penny loafers and button-down shirts? chris lived in the room across from mi
