uc regents confirmed napolitano back in july. but despite the confirmation, many say she's the wrong person for the job. she's had to deal with a backlash for immigrant rights groups who are upset over her previous stances on immigration and what they say was deporting 2 million illegal immigrants while the director. >> we judge people by the action and she was responsible for federal immigration enforcement and the record number of deportation ofs of -- deportations of more than 2 million people. she is an insult and a threat and an unwelcomed sign to immigrant students in california. >> and it's happening at uc berkeley underground vault exploded tonight. there are reports of my nor injury. blast noubingd knocked out power cancelling evening class and evacuation of campus. some people stuck in elevators and rescued. good evening everyone. dan is off tonight. all happened near the campus tower around 6:30. nick smith is on campus now with the very latest for us. nick? >>reporter: this is still a developing situation. in fact in a few seconds we hear the loud speaker behind me. that is campus police letting students know that the campus is indeed closed. if you look over my shoulder you see that there's a car blocking the gates. only essential personnel are allowed on campu campus. uc officials now investigating if today explosion is related to copper theft. this is what we know. about 4:30 this afternoon there was a power outage on campus. 2 hours later maintenance wor workers were rae storing the power to the campus, there was an explosion. now that explosion caused massive power outage across campus. there were minor injuries. one per

the campus police would begin spreading out around uc berkeley, evacuating the entire campus. telling people to be careful of the manhole covers. still a threat of the serious explosion. what caused that fire? the spokesman said that they are investigating the possibility that it was started by the copper thieves. >> apparently the unknown individuals had been in the process of removing the copper grounding wire from our electrical system. the damage that we were able to see was repaired on sunday. but the power outage tonight is an indication that the damage they caused may have been far more extensive than what we originally thought. >> reporter: as they worked to get the flames under control, they were causing problems on other parts of the campus as they worked for hours to rescue about 20 people trapped in elevators. the blackouts began around 4:30. most classes were canceled, but some students went on with their lessons outside. even the choir continued their rehearsals. these scenes took place just before the explosion and the entire campus got evacuated. >> it's defini

new uc president janet napolitano is vowing to keep tuition affordable. during a visit to uc-santa cruz she noted how tuition has tripled the past decade and says officials are working to keep the costs down. napolitano took over about three weeks ago and is stopping at all the uc campuses. she was a controversial choice and has been met with protests at her last two stops. >>> the san jose police department thought it was picking up dozens of new recruits to join its ranks. it turns out about half of the recent class is considering working for our police agencies. the class of 40 just graduated in september. the san jose police force has seen its numbers dwindle in recent years due to retirements, layoffs and cuts. >>> and the family of a 2-year- old east oakland boy is praying that he will recover from a gunshot wound. on sunnyside street yesterday, diante jackson was seriously wounded by a stray bullet playing outside his home. police say the shots were fired two blocks away. diante was last listed in critical condition. no arrests have been made. >>>

uc berkeley police are putting more officers on campus to deal with a sudden rise in armed robberies. or attempted robberies on and around campus in less than a week. on tuesday two men demanded a student's backpack. one of them had a gun. last sunday three men tried to take another student's backpack. and on saturday a man took a student's phone at gunpoint. last thursday a robber stole another student's phone and an armed man assaulted a woman after demanding money. >>> uc berkeley law school graduate will have to complete a six-month boot camp as punishment for killing an exotic bird in las vegas. prosecutors say 25-year-old justin teixiera beheaded the bird at the flamingo hotel during a drunken escapade last year. after the boot camp the felony may be reduce it had to a misdemeanor. he may never be able to practice law if the felony stays on his record. >>> people in north oakland say they are frustrated after learning plans for extra police protection have fallen apart. armed robberies are up 34% from a year ago. police were planning to assign a crime reduction team to north oak

c-span: what impact did uc-berkeley have on you? because anybody listening says, 'berkeley, these are conservatives.' that's a big liberal institution. >> guest: well, that's right. i think it--there was definitely--funny when i look back on this. this is my generation. the--these folks are my age. and when i look back, there was definitely a liberal orthodoxy on campus. the daily cal, which i worked for an--and helped run, was very much dismissive of conservative views. so i--and i didn't really think about it at the time. i just--that was--that was the way it was, you know. and i--it took awhile to, i think, become more open-minded about other points of view. but berkeley was--it was a terrific institution and lively and--i mean, it's--it's a terrific place to be. c-span: because you spent so much time in here on the impact of college on these five, what impacted you in college? did you have a teacher, did you have a philosopher, somebody that you followed? >> guest: well, berkeley's a big school, so no. i think really the impact

panic on the campus of uc berkeley this evening. this video was shot of thick smoke pouring out of the ground. an electrical explosion sent flames shooting out of the ground. >> a fire ball erupted. the building was intect but the fire ball was two times the height of the building. >> reporter: students tweeted out pictures of the explosion which hurt four people nearby. but none of them were seriously hurt. >> an emergency has been declared. >> reporter: police kept the campus shut down all evening with power out virtually everywhere. the power went out two hours before the explosion. students were using cell phones to light up the room. the power outage and dangerous explosion were likely caused by vandals stealing copper wiring. >> university engineers were bringing the power back online. it now appears that the damage caused by these unknown individuals was far more extensive and far more significant than was immediately seen and assessed. >> reporter: the hope is that the lights will be back on in the morning and time for class
