this is the culmination of a week of action here at uc santa cruz and across the uc system, for that matter. students are pushing back against the plan that would raise tuition. 96 hours of action is what it's being called. there's a lot of anger and frustration felt by student protesters, and it stems from a plan by the uc president to hike tuition by as much as 5% over each of the next five years, if the uc system does not get an increase in state funding. so far we have not seen police out here at this location. we did talk with one. protest organizers a short time ago about the message that they're hoping to send with this week's action. >> i am seeking to protect the privatization of the university, protest the hikes, trying to price people at the university. that's what i'm doing today. >> reporter: before today's demonstration, university officials here in santa cruz alerted many of the staff members and faculty members of what was happening, and they were told if they can work from home or work off site, they should do that. no cars can enter through the demonstration here. t

the uc campus has it's own police department. we do assist from time to time when they might have a planned or unplanned demonstration. but it does make sense, i believe, that that border might go as far as down as mariposa because the new uc hospital. the southern most portion of that a butts 17th street. that being said, we know in the bayview there is currently a tremendous amount of growth and there will be continuing to be a tremendous amount of growth with the park being demolished we know there is going to be a 50,000 square foot shopping center with the greenhouse and it will be connected to the shipyard or over the cos way. when it's built out there might be an additional 30-40,000 people per day in the shipyard when we account for the commercial and residential retail. and they will go to san francisco as well to the ferry building. so i do expect that should again should the current proposal be adopted that it will have a minimal effect on us. certainly the services that we provide with residents to the bayview and wit
