nbc bay area's traci grant is at uc berkeley with the very latest for us. traci? >> reporter: well, diane, the cal berkeley lacrosse team, the women's lacrosse team, actually seems to be losing to notre dame right now. today the university administrators were actually pretty forthcoming about the fact that title ix did play a role in keeping these women's sports around today but in the end it really came down to money. >> you heard a lot of things and a lot of rumors out there, but never did we expect it would come to this. and quite honestly we were led to believe all or none. >> reporter: when uc berkeley head baseball coach met with administrators this morning he learned that three of the five sports programs the university planned to cut were reinstated. men's baseball and gymnastics were not among them. >> the way things stand today i'll be somewhere else a year from now. >> reporter: dropping all five sports would have saved the school $4 million a year. donors raised between 12 and 13 million dollars, but it was only half as much as uc berkeley said it would

supposed to be decision day, at the uc berkeley campus. it is not happening. some of the most historic, successful sports programs on the chopping block due to lack of money the tonight lack of clarity seemingly. tracy grant joining us from cal campus with the details. what is happening? when is the decision going to come? >> well your guess is as good as mine. at this point a lot of waiting. a lot of rumors. and then later this afternoon. uc berkeley spokesman said that there would be no announcement at least not today. the berkeley men's gymnastics team practice went on as usual though the athletes have something extra weighing them down. >> gymnastics is, yeah, pretty much your life. >> the lives of student athletes are poised to change dramatically unless the university intervenes and decides to save men's baseball, rugby, gymnastics as well as women's lacrosse and gymnastics from the chopping block. >> i'm optimistic. i think that to get through this period then you can get through anything. >> last fall, uc berkeley announced plans to cut the sports prog

over the weekend the uc berkeley grads pleaded not guilty to espionage charges. two of the hikers, shane bauer and josh fattal were present in court. sarah shourd was released on $500,000 bail. she was summoned back to court but entered her plea despite not being there. the trial will continue for one more session. >>> police are searching for home robbers who assaulted a man over the weekend in richmond. it happened at a home on bristle cone drive before 7:00 yesterday morning. the men forced their way in beating a man inside the home before they drove off in his green 1995 chevrolet silverado pickup. the man was treated and released from the hospital for minor head injuries. they are asking anyone with information to call richmond police. >>> budget cuts are upsetting local parents. the city is trying to do away with the popular children's inflatables at the city parks. they tie up staff processing with labor intensive permits. the parents say the kids will be the ones who suffer. >> obviously, it is going to be hard because, you know, as a parent you are limit

christin ayers at uc-berkeley where word is expected today on the fates of five sports. christin. >> reporter: good morning. word expected at about noon today and we're hearing that the decision could certainly be impacted by title ix. two of the teams on the chopping block are women sports teams and there have been reports that without those teams, the university would not be in compliance with title ix. let's take a look at some of the over teams that are on the chopping block, as well. we have baseball, men's rugby which would lose its varsity status, men's gymnastics, women's lacrosse and also women's gymnastics. efforts to reinstate the teams have been largely driven by an online group called savecalsports.com made up of alumni and current students. they say they have raised between $12 and $15 million of the $25 million needed to fund the teams for the short term and the university will decide whether to eliminate all of the teams to save some of them or to save none of them really. what does seem clear is that if the university does save some of the teams, the wom

on the line in all five athletic programs at uc-berkeley.hat's men's baseball, men's and women's gymnastics, women's lacrosse and men's rugby all could face elimination, they are facing elimination. if they are not saved they would be gone after this school year. and like most these days it comes down to money. reducing the number of intercollegiate teams from 29 to 24, which saves the university about $4 million a year. but eliminating two women's teams, the gymnastics and lacrosse, would put cal in violation of title 9. that's the federal law that calls for jenter equity. one fan i spoke to says you know what, it all comes down to cal football and paying the head coach. >> if they didn't have to pay the money for those programs and put them in the academic school part of the school. that's all cal is doing. the programs that don't generate a lot of money. for the schools. >> i did research and i found the coach makes close to $3 million a year. chancellor is making the final decision. that $25 million is raised to pay for the operating exp
