we have a couple of dozen protestors camping out here at sproul plaza at uc-berkeley. we have three tents and several students sleeping right now in sleeping bags and on cardboard boxes. they have been hanging out here all night. police say that they would not allow people to set up tents, but you can see there is some tolerance for it. police are really, though, trying to prevent a full-on "occupy" camp something like we saw at the oakland city hall. [ screaming ] >> stop beating students! >> reporter: this was the scene as police moved through the crowd at around 9:30 last night to remove several tents that had been put up, several students complaining of excessive force at that point saying that they were injured by jabs from officers' batons. 32 people were arrested in this confrontation with officers from uc-berkeley, sheriff's officers and the oakland pd. they confiscated the protestors' tents and supplies and this was the second big melee of yesterday. the first one happened around 3:30 p.m. university officials say the protestors can use sproul plaza as a gathe

uc berkeley police along with the cal chancellor lor are moments away from conducting a news conference. and why this shooting took place. as soon as it begins actually all right. the news conference has just begun. let's go inside california hall with the chancellor and police chief are speaking. >> we're early and preliminary in the investigation stages of this. it's an event about an hour and a half into the investigation this, is preliminary information we have at the time. at about 2:17 we received a 911 call that there was a reported man with a gun in a backpack at the haas business school. our -- at 2:19 officer arrived at the haas business school and made contact with occupants in the haas business school and determined the individual was in a computer lab-type environment. when the officers made contact with the suspect or the individual he in fact did pull a firearm out of the backpack and displayed knit a threatening manner. officers feared for them selfs and individuals in the room. they fired or shot at the individual hitting him. the individual is was injured. and he was c

walk out scheduled uc berkeley tomorrow to protest last week confrontation with police over occupy cal. faculty member pulled by the hair as police broke up the protest. and board of regent cancelled the meeting at the uc san francisco mission bay campus after learning that an anti-wall street rally planned at the meeting on wednesday could turn violent. >>> well mellow night at the occupy sf encampment at justin herman plaza along the embarcadero some campers were about here about 40 new tent joined them over the wean. occupy sf regular say they have a dialogue with the city and do not expect police to caid their encampment. >>> man in san jose got whole lot more than he paid for when he bought a used minivan. turns out it was loaded with cocaine after driving around in it for more than a year charles taking the 2008 chrysler minivan he bought from thrifty rent acar in for service because he couldn't get the window to roll down. mechanic discovered cocaine packed in the doorjamb. investigators can only speculate it was left hand by someone who previously rented the van. thrifty agreed

in the last 30 minutes uc berkeley police have moved in and began taking tents. katie marzullo is live on campus. >> reporter: the camp has been clear. what we are seeing right now, the occupy cal protesters doing a mic check right now. we want to let you know they are saying how the administration said that they could stay with tends -- [ inaudible ] -- protesters in high spirits as you can hear. riot gear are here. they did clear the tents from the steps of sproul hall. now they are surrounding sproul plaza keeping protesters on the outside. we heard report there is were some arrests. we have not heard any reports of violence or conflict or confrontation with police. for the most part the students are staying quiet, i mean, nonviolent but they are making noise seem to be having a good time. it is not all students. some are residents of berkeley. and the residents were -- [ inaudible ] nonstudents were asked to stay at a further away barrier. that is who is playing the music. interesting scene we'll continue to follow it. and find out more about what is going on

. >> reporter: during a week trying to set up an occupy camp at uc berkeley, students have returned to cal's sproul plaza in fourth. >> the same people who run the wall street banks and kick people out of their houses are the ones who run the university of california and raise our fees and burden us with a tremendous amount of debt. >> reporter: this is what happe happened last week when they tried to occupy the plaza. police in riot gear disbanded several people and what's ruled as heavy handed approach had sharp criticism. >> they started heavy handing me and i got scraped up on my arms and arrested me. >> we wanted a peaceful protest and the way cops reacted to students peacefully standing their ground was absolutely horrible. >> we will take this step by steep and see what happens. >> reporter: this time, police are taking a much different approach. officers are visible but are allowing the protest to unfold. the university spokesman said the chancellor was disturbed by what he saw last week and determined not to let it happen again. >> there's a great deal of resolve on this campu

. >>> and we're learning more about the uc berkeley student behind the campus shooting at cal. more information about the student shot and killed by police, alex? >> reporter: well, chris travis had started a two year degree program here at the school of business. for some reason yesterday he brought a loaded handgun in with him to the computer lab on campus. the police officers ended up confronting him. and in the end they shot him. this is a facebook page set up to honor 32-year-old chris travis, the uc berkeley student killed by campus police yesterday. according to this youtube video, he worked as a shift supervisor for a security company. he dropped out of school before but was giving it another try, hoping to pursue a career in national business. he was living in the house near campus. his neighbor says he was quiet, kept to himself. >> it does surprise me, interesting you know, you never really get to know the people you live around well enough to expect something like that. >> reporter: meanwhile, the room where those shots were fired yesterday, it is still closed off a

the uc berkeley chancellor we talked with him this afternoon, he told us that there was a woman, a staff member who spotted this man or road the elevator with this man and saw the gun in his backpack. he apparently while he was in the elevator with this staff member, he reached in the backpack and reached in for the gun. that drew concern in her and she ended up alerted authorities. no one hurt in this shooting, we are still waiting. we asked police for an update on the condition of the man with the gun who was shot. he was rushed over to highland hospital we understand. we don't know his condition, police are not releasing his condition. they're not saying much about who he is either. we asked whether he's a student, they said at this point it's unclear if this person is a student or not. all we know is he is a man, a white man in his 20s, and again, uc berkeley police confronted him. he had a weapon they say inside of the business school this afternoon and he was shot by uc berkeley police officers. that's the latest as we know it here from the cal campus, i'm alex sadvedge. >>> from a

uc-berkeley isn't letting the campus turn into a camp anne makovec reports. >> reporter: you can see several dozen protestors camped out here behind me. you have about four tents set up as well as other protestors wrapped up in sleeping bags right now. the police standing in a line as you can see there in riot gear behind them. police said they wouldn't allow people to set up camp like you see here but they are trying to prevent a full-on "occupy" camp like we saw in berkeley outside city hall. here was the scene as police moved through the crowd at around 9:30 last night to remove the tents that had been put up. several students complained of excessive force saying they were injured by jabs from officers' batons. 32 people were arrested in this confrontation with officers from uc-berkeley, sheriff's office and the oakland pd. they confiscated the tents and supplies. this what you're look at now was the second big melee of yesterday. the first happened around 3:30 p.m. take a look at that. this is youtube video from inside that confrontation. police pushing through a line of protesto

a small campsite is sprouting up at uc berkeley. christie smith is live on campus where things are calmer after a night filled with clashes with the police. christie. >> good morning, yeah, uc berkeley police just moved in and took down the last tent that had been out here since last night. demonstrators say it was sort of symbolic of their movement. what's happening today at sproul plaza is that some classes in the human man thes department are being held outside to support the movement and over here demonstrators are meeting to debrief on what happened last night and they say this is not over. >> this morning, demonstrators at sproul plaza wrapped up a handful of tents that were out from overnight as police stood watch. >> they gave us a warning that they would start taking down the tents. so this one -- we want to leave that one up as a symbol, but this one we feel we should take down because it will be more useful tonight when we can defend it. >> this after a night of clashes between demonstrators trying to establish an occupy
