his family is from el salvador and he is a writer and a visiting scholar at uc berkeley's center forresearch. he has been reporting on archbishop romero's beatification for the guardian and latino rebels. welcome back to democracy now! talk about what happened this weekend. >> what happened, amy, basically, a really is asian of what romero said himself before he died. he knew they were going to kill him. that was pretty clear from talking to people who knew him. he said, if i am killed, i will rise again in the salvador people. and what happened on saturday was precisely that in a formal way. people here will tell you that romero was a saint for us here long before the church caught up into the beatification, which was held up high politics that included, for example [indiscernible] administration trying to get romero to shut up in the 1980's and from then on, the u.s. is not played a very positive role here. amy: can you talk about exactly what happened on that day when he was assassinated? give us the politics of what took place, who murdered oscar romero as he was giving his chape

moved from vietnam and thanks to [inaudible] community comage in free mont was able to transfer to uc berkeley as well and that is where we met. as you can see we are a better family. as you can see community college runs deep in our family and we wouldn't have the life now without a community college education. but our story isn't unique. there are over 80 thousand students every day at city college that dependent on the education and access to public education to improve their life and a better future. i take this appointment very seriously and personal. these student desirfb to have the same fime of fluent a better life that i did not so many years ago. i know what it is like to navigate the complex and often times over weming brurocracy of community college system. insureing access to high quality serveess and counseling is one of my priorities on the bord. for the past 80 years city college played a important role for many famentlies that tried to have a better life. like the mayor said, nothing grows or economy better than public education. community colleges are the lanch path for great

he attended school in berkeley and received ba and mba from uc berkeley. early in his career dins became a leader in [inaudible] trnz portation work. by 1995 he had become the first south east asian [inaudible] partner interacting with offices in endonesia, malaysia, pill peens [inaudible] expanded to [inaudible] global service group to 28 countries. his work at deloit was not limited to [inaudible] strong business ties with asian country. he was ininstrumental in encouraging the firm to join the fight against aids and breast cancer. dens was the first racial minority president of the common wealth club of california. a century old convening organization where major leaders at the national and international level engage in public discorss. he was also the first racial minority president of the school of business alum nigh association. he has served on countless board including nob nub festival, self help for the elderly [inaudible] california business counsel to name a few. he serves as a cfo and treshier of city college san francisco foundation. just to g

the new building is a $59 million facility with funding from uc berkeley, california public utilitiesssion, state and private support. >> what this building represents is really our hopes for the future and also our plans for the future. it's not really the building that we're here to celebrate, it's our hopes about the power of the ideas that will come from it. >> reporter: a number of dignitaries on hand for the dedication including steuive chu who the building is named after and also served as u.s. secretary of energy. steven chu. >> what they are trying to do first is to use sunlight and make hydrogen, splitting water. we also need to capture carbon dioxide from fossil fuel plants, from a lot of things. >> reporter: the new building will house 100 researchers who will work in what is called the joint center for artificial photo synthesis and a lot of people here were on hand for the dedication including berkeley mayor tom bates. as you can see this building is brand new and it does look like some people are indeed already working inside. live in berkeley, tori, back to you. >> tha
