some scary moments at uc berkeley today after shots fired on campus.his happened near the clark kerr residence hall track. the university went on lockdown for more than six hours as police searched for a suspect. abc seven news reporter lena howland has the latest now on the investigation. >> gunshots at uc berkeley set off an hours long manhunt, just as summer session comes to a close. it started thursday morning when campus police say a man fired at least two gunshots toward the clark kerr campus track. a neighbor told us he heard the shots. >> i think about us laying in bed about 737. i don't know what time. and i thought i heard a pop, you know, the gunshot and then all of a sudden, about two minutes later, all you heard was sirens and everything going off for about ten minutes. >> no injuries were reported, but the nearly seven hour search for the suspect put both the clark kerr campus and the hillside campus on lockdown. seven bay area law enforcement agencies did an exhaustive search of the area, including the popular hiking trails right behind

>>> at uc berkeley as the new school year gets going, the university is putting new protest policies into place to try to stop encampments like we saw all over the country last year which brought this group of protesters out today, most of them wearing masks in an act of defiance over another new restriction, banning students wearing masks during demonstrations. university leaders say students masking for medical reasons are free to wear them during any demonstrations, but anyone they think is trying to hide their identity can be punished by the school. >> they want to try to expose us to not only disciplinary actions by the university, but also to outside organizations who make it their m.o. to try to tank our careers. >> you're protesting to share your beliefs, not hide your face, hide your values. that's what i believe. >> university officials told us today that if students are found violating the restrictions, they'll first receive a warning. if they continue, they'll be written up and have to go through a campus review process. >>> across the bay in san francisco, after a summer

it is a rite of passage for uc berkeley freshmen moving into the dorms. still ahead, the new campus policies. these students will have to learn this year, students are learning about new policies when it comes to protests and demonstrations. >> it's back to school season in the bay area, and that includes college. >> i'm excited. i'm moving back up here. i was born up here, so i'm excited to kind of come back home. >> bay area is amazing. i think i picked a pretty good spot. >> it's move in day number one for freshmen at uc berkeley, and they are looking forward to it. >> specifically, i feel like social life, but mainly because i'm really into civil engineering. i like engineering, i really want to be in like in classes like being on hands on and doing projects and stuff like that. >> these freshmen were just finishing up high school when pro-palestinian protests took over college campuses all over the country. in california, we watched clashes between students and police at uc santa cruz, fights broke out between protesters and counter-protesters at ucl

uc berkeley, no different other than the demonstrations here remaining mostly peaceful now compare that to what happened down at uc campuses at the end of last year throughout the state, including down in santa cruz, where we watched protesters blocking the entrance of campus, clashing with police officers who eventually made dozens of arrests and some of the most intense fights. and some of those intense scenes came from ucla, where counter protesters began a brawl with those staying in the encampment. similarly, police worked for hours trying to break those up and arrested several students. chancellors at each of these campuses will now follow new directives, which cal's chancellor addressed and asked for participation from the next student body. we can fully enjoy the benefits of our community that that community provides. >> if we can debate and disagree without descending into identity based condemnation, without violence, harassment or discrimination, without infringing on the rights of others. >> on the csu side, cal state humboldt saw a pretty intense interaction with students,

move in day at uc berkeley continues tomorrow. reporting from berkeley. i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins is being asked to recuse herself from the case of 26 protesters who shut down the golden gate bridge back in april during a gaza ceasefire protest. lawyers representing the protesters have sent a letter to d.a. jenkins demanding her recusal from the case. it's over. what they're calling conflicts of interest and patterns of anti-arab racism within her office. the charges against the protesters include felony conspiracy, trespassing, and false imprisonment. the lawyers accused d.a. jenkins of having back door meetings with members of the israeli consulate. they also referenced patterns of anti-arab racism and rhetoric among the da staff. the da's office issued a statement to ktvu saying in part, charging decisions are made based on the facts, evidence and the law. we do not pursue political prosecutions under any circumstances, at any time. goes on to say d.a. jenkins meetings with consular staff do
