an interesting story at uc berkeley. could a new yellow powder be key to removing carbon dioxide from the air? carbon dioxide is a heat trapping gas that's created from the burning of fossil fuel. think coal, oil, and even wildfires. research shows that human activities have increased the levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide, raising the temperature of the earth. a large tree which is good can suck as much as 40kg of carbon dioxide out of the air in a year. scientists at uc berkeley say they can do the same job with small amounts of that stuff, right there. that fluffy yellow powder. in short, we just pack the powder inside the column. just like a straw. and like this size, the column. and when we pack the powder inside the column, we push air directly through the column to see how much co2 is being absorbed. by using the powder. and in the future, we need to scale this up and also increase the size of the column to absorb more co2 from the air, to clean more air from the environment. they're just cleaning the air here.

a report from uc berkeley and stanford last year says between 15 and 20% of k through 12 public schools have no ac at al, and as many as another 10% need major repairs or replacements for their systems to work adequately. advocates say that that's likely an underestimate as well. a lot of bay area schools, they've been saying, you know, we're just not going to have recess outside. we're not going to have athletic events outside. so i know here in san francisco yesterday, the school district said, hey, we're not going to have any athletic games. you know, we're not going to do soccer. we're not going to do basketball. we're not going to do those things outside. those events are supposed to return today because it's going to be a little cooler. but really the question is, how do you keep the kids cool when they're inside? and i think the answer is, if you don't have ac, you use a lot of fans. you kind of see see what you can do, get some air blowing, get the windows open. and that's kind of the best bet for now. live in san francisco amanda quintana, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right amand
