. >> you're a professor of ethnic studies at uc berkeley and the author of this book. where did the idea come from to do this? >> the idea came from a very personal place. i'm the daughter of filipino immigrants and i was born and raised in new york city surrounded by a cluster of hospitals. so many of our family friends and neighbors were filipino immigrant nurses and so i got to really know them as friends and neighbors and then when i became more interested in history and pursuing a phd in history at ucla, one of the things i observed is that i didn't see filipino nurses. i didn't see filipino immigrants as much in the historical scholarly literature about immigration and nursing and so it inspired my book. >> so why are there so many filipino nurses in the united states? >> that really is the key question of "empire of care" and so many people think of filipino nurses as a newer immigrant group. what i argue in "empire of care" is that there's a longer history to this migration of filipino nurses and so many filipino nurses are here because americans were there in

i'm joined now by jessica hygos who studies waste management at uc berkeley. thank you for joining us this day after christmas. what are some easy tips for folks who may want to cut down on the waste during the holidays? >> it's important to start thinking about this before any sort of product or good is purchased. figuring out how to reduce the amount of waste generated from the get-go, a lot of times this can result in gifting more things like experiences or gift cards where the individual gets to choose what they purchase and knowing that they will like it, love it, keep it for the long haul or as i say, experiences where there is no waste ultimately. instead it's a dinner or going to the zoo or the museum or some other adventure and memory. >> so i am what is known as an aspirational recycler which means i probably get it wrong. i'm like that looks like it should be recycled. let's try. that's probably not the way to do it. how do you know because there's so many different kinds of packaging you get with any product that you have. >> there are, yeah. what

this process will also allow us to operationalize some of the recommendations outlined in the uc berkeleyrt. and so during the strategic planning process, we developed a clear prioritization funding assessment to do five things. first, we had we developed a five year strategic delivery plans. so all of together to outline their program goals their objectives, and their required resources for five years. then they developed a line item budget. so managers took all theline items, and then also back to all of thections within the climate action plan. and then finally we took all of those requests. we reviewed them and we ranked them. so we had a small team that looked at all of the budget requests from our program managers, and we used a specific prioritization criteria, which i'm going to go over. and i just want to note as i'm going through this presentation and i use the term budget request this is all internal.sically we're having working with all of our staff and my colleagues to assess their internal budget requests. none of this has been shared externally. so here is the prioritizatio
