but a recent uc davis study shows 254,000 people in the basin in salinas valley are at risk of drinkingater contaminated with nitrous. >> what they found was that the nitrous there is due to agriculture uses. >> reporter: landmark new rules have been at that particular timed by the regional water control board -- been adapted by the regional water control board. it's a move opposed by farmers such as luis uribe. >> i've been drinking that water for 45 years, i'm still here. nitrates or no nitrates. >> reporter: nitrates have been used for over 40 years but only recently has the link been made. the water testing rules follows a case in pescadero where 50 people farm workers and their families were found to be drinking nitrate contaminated water for at least 10 years. >> it was a huge issue for that farm. they spent tens of thousands of dollars needing to remedy the water issues there. >> reporter: kerry lobel with puente de la costa source say families are particularly vulnerable. but lovell says most people in the area on private wells don't drink from the tap. >> i think for most of us
