well i before i a professor at ucla, i a civil rights litigator new york city bringing lawsuits. new york city police, police officers and new york city department of corrections, other agencies in the area. and when i was in that practice, there were a lot of questions that came to mind about the way in which our system, the way in which civil litigation actually makes its way through the courts, the impact that it has on police officers and departments, because the underlying expectation is that these cases are going to have an impact, but when i was bringing these, i came to learn that in new york city, at least the money in these cases very rarely came out of police officers and police officers and departments didn't even seem to have basic about what happened in these cases, i would depose officers, meaning question them under oath, and they didn't know how many times they'd been sued or what the allegations were in cases against them, what the outcomes were in these cases and. so these were the kinds of questions that got me really inspired when i became a professor at, ucl

and ucla announced that they were leaving last year. colorado following suit more recently this week, which was a major blow finalizing a deal that sends them to the big 12. now, more schools could be leaving, according to espn. and the university of arizona is deep in talks with the big 12. and barring anything crazy in their board of regents meeting, that deal is expected to be finalized soon. this all happens as the big ten conference authorized meetings to possibly add oregon and washington, though according to the athletic that has lost some steam this morning just six days ago, the pac 12 commissioner was asked if he was worried about more schools leaving. this is what he had to say. it's not a concern. our schools are committed to each other and to the pac 12. we'll get our meteorites deal done, will announce the deal. i think the realignment that's going on in college athletics will come to an end for this cycle. and then the truth is we've got bigger fish to fry to the end zone for the cardinal. now, the commissioner also added

according to researchers at ucla, rising temperatures have sucked up more than 10 trillion gallons ofd irrigation water to seven western states with some 40 million people. cnn's lucy kafanov joins us from denver. lucy, this is interesting because folks have taken some comfort seeing the big snowfall, for instance, in the past season to help address the many issues we're seeing from rising global temperatures. but here you see a lot of that's just disappearing. that's a problem. >> reporter: yeah. i mean, it ain't magic. it's climate change. and what's most concerning, jim, is it's specifically the human-caused climate crisis that is resulting in these devastating water flow reductions. 10 trillion gallons, if you think about it, is enough to fill lake mead. this is a massive amount of water that's being lost, evaporated, lost because of these rising temperatures. and this new study that you mentioned from researchers at ucla shows that the colorado river's first ever water shortage that was declared a few years ago would not have been declared if it wasn't for anthropogenic warming.

some of the performing arts, film programs at ucla could be more competitive. so, the u.c.'s are pretty transparent, you can go on their website to see which majors are impacted. that's typically the language they use, it is more competitive, more interested students than spots available. kristen: some of the top u.c.'s are down to 10% admissions, so many great children will be left behind. given that, how do you form a college list. a list of schools to apply to? lauren: the advice i give is to think about around 10 schools on your list. at some people are going to have less, that's fine. i would not want to more than that because it is a hard -- it's hard work and you have to show sincere interest in those schools. but you have to have a range of types of schools in terms of selectivity. if you are applying to very highly selective places, that have the 10% admit rates, you also have to have places for which you are in their wheelhouse and you think you have a good shot at admission, and them places that are a likely school, a safety school, a place you are confident you w
