reporting from the ucla campus in los angeles. one of the epicenters of the protest has been columbia university in new york. joining me now is congresswoman kathy manning of north carolina who met with students at columbia university. she is also the co-chair of the house bipartisan task force for combating anti-semitism. thank you for joining us. what did you hear from students that you spoke with? >> we talked with jewish students who have been harassed, intimidated, and felt like they were unable to walk through the quad to get to classes, to get to the library, trying to study in the library with serious chance and drum beating going on, hour after hour. it made it very difficult for them to study for exams, and not only was there an email from campus rabbis advising them to go home, to stay away from campus, the university actually arranged to have hybrid classes, which was frankly, an acknowledgment of how out of control things have gotten on the campus and how intimidating this hostile environment has been, which is create

let's head across the country to adrienne broaddus, who was at ucla. of california los angeles. what can you tell us about the demonstrations there? it looks like you are right by an encampment. >> reporter: we are, alex. a lot of similarities here. like many of the colleges we have seen it nationwide, this part of ucla's campus looks like a campground. you noted the encampment. when we showed up, many students were inside of these tents, sleeping. there issue, growing concern over the war in gaza. but, there is a key difference, the tone here is peaceful. we received a statement from the vice chancellor saying in part, "it's also important to note that we are following university of california systemwide policy guidance, which directs us not to request law enforcement involvement preemptively, and only if absolutely necessary to protect the physical safety of our campus community." by contrast, we saw nearly 100 people arrested at the university of southern california, which many of us call usc. also, leaders there made the move to cancel the commence

let's go first to camila bernal, who's on the ucla campus in los angeles. camila, what are you seeing this afternoon hey jessica. >> so things here at ucla remain very peaceful, but keep in mind, they are taking over a large portion of the university with this encampment, there's people here who said that inside. there actually giving people classes to learn about the middle east and the conflict there, they're actually holding religion the ceremonies, and they say, yes, this is a public space and have said that anyone can go in. but also they do have a check-in area and they have denied access to certain people. they've not allowed us to go inside and they continued to say that their demands are very similar to other universities around the country. you're hearing things like divestment, you're hearing things like trans conspiracy. they want to see where the money is going and they say they will remain here until they get clarity from the university in terms of where they stand in those divestments. so again, things have remained peaceful and you're seeing

back in la, ucla students are joining national protests. protesters set up an encampment on the ucla campus this morning. they built a wooden fence along the encampment with signs in support of palestinians. organizers. organizers demands include those calls for divestment to companies tied to israel, along with suspension of study abroad programs in israel. in texas, supporters gathered outside the county jail in austin, where protesters were being detained. that's following tense protests at the university of texas. austin authorities say more than 50 people who were booked into the jail have since been released. the protests started tuesday when students walked out of class to occupy the lawn. ut austin's jewish student organization, texas hillel, accuses protesters of promoting a, quote, hateful agenda by coinciding their demonstration with passover. two cases involving former president trump today. the hush money trial underway right now in new york, and his immunity case at the nation's highest court today, the supreme court listened

at ucla, tensions flared after dueling demonstrations clashed on campus. this happened while pro israeli groups were heading a rally. the spokesperson says that the protesters knocked over a barrier used to separate the two groups. it's not clear which group breached the barrier. >> i feel like the other side isn't really -- listening to anything. they just call everyone hamas supporters and they just call everyone like terrorists. >> today's events here are sadly typical of what's happening on america's college campuses which is -- bullying and harassment of jews. >> ucla says things were mostly peaceful before today and there's no word on -- whether or not anybody was hurt during the clash. >>> a different scene here in the bay area. demonstrations have been peaceful so far and at stanford this encampment at white plaza has been up for a few days now. and student protesters at uc berkeley have been camping outside of sproul hall for nearly a week, this is video from yesterday. they will not leave until the university agrees to divest themselves of any pr

well, the protests have also spread to ucla. another tent encampment a little different at ucla, you can actually see some palestinian and israeli flags in the crowd. you saw that israeli flag there on the right side of your screen. some small scuffles did break out various law enforcement agencies are on site and a big announcement from usc. the university is now canceling its main stage graduation ceremony, which usually draws upwards of 60,000 people. usc is also tightening security for the rest of its commencement events. 93 people were arrested after refusing to leave campus last night. the campus remained closed to the general public today and at uc berkeley, it's now day four of this protest. tents have taken over the steps and lawn at sproul hall. it's a mix of student and alumni demonstrators. tomorrow is the last day of regular classes at cal, but protesters say they're willing to keep going until after. until their demands are met. i'm 100% optimistic that we will achieve our goal of divestment, but the students here

that was ucla, i believe. there was a student quoted in "the new york times" yesterday who said, "i support a cease-fire. i really wanted to go in and wanted to -- i wanted to be with the people that were protesting for a cease-fire. basically, it wasn't about a cease-fire. it was about the end of israel. because i support israel, they told me -- the existence of israel, not what israel is doing, the existence of israel. because i supported the existence of israel as a jew, but because as a jew i also supported peace and a cease-fire, the end of the war in gaza, they told me that because i was -- i didn't want israel to be eliminated from the face of the earth, i was not allowed to be part of their protests." >> yeah, we had mayor eric adams of new york city on yesterday who said it was a mix of student protesters as well as outside agitators. he was clear to say, most of the students, peaceful. they were there on campus. it's the outside agitators causing most of the trouble and hurling the violent rhetoric.
