well, when uconn template inflation -- when you contemplate inflation, it can really boil down to two main drivers of inflation. one would be profligate government spending. we have a $2 trillion deficit the last couple of years. post-covid. we need to get back, of course, to pre-covid levels of spending and get back on a better track. and also, importantly, the cost of energy. because energy effects everything. from the production side, whether in the farm fields, in a mine in a manufacturing plant, anything that is being made requires energy. and so when you mine those products, you take those raw materials and turn them into something, every step of the chain there's energy consumed. finally, with the delivery from factory or mill or whatever to the store shelf requires energy. whether it's by a truck or a train, ship, what have you. they're all brought here because of energy. the electricity in the plants that are producing things, sawing up timber, milling grain, whatever it is. all requires energy. so when those costs go up, i would say unnecessarily the last few years, then of

appreciate uconn convenienting this committee and thanks to the witnesses. you've been here for a while and i appreciate your willingness to illose date these important issues. you went to basin railway as an important project in utah's third district and it's my district as home, this major oil fields. there's several crude by rail projects in the works in my district and that is one of them. and it's an opportunity for us to reduce truck traffic on dangerous roads. these are mountain roads with terrible weather sometimes. and move that crude oil out of the basin and move goods into the basin. so with that in mind, mr. baker, i was interested in your take on this. what are some of the major regulatory issues that face the railroad industry generally as it relates to american energy and what steps we can take to enhance energy dominance in the united states of america and utah, my congressional district specifically? mr. baker: the basin project is very exciting. it would be served by a short line railroad which would then connect to union pacific and connec
