ucsb is going to be offering counseling services. what are some things that folks should be looking out for in terms of their own need to access, hey, do i need to go talk to somebody? >> what we're going to see immediately, the people who have been affected either by having a friend or family member. of course, the extreme grief, buts a the post traumatic distress disorder. this is for anyone who's been exposed to someone who has lost their lives or who they feel, perhaps, were in danger themselves. so that's going to be happening in this town. it's a very idyllic town. so, you know, the threshold level here will be very low as far as them being disturbed as to what has happened. so the school will offer the counseling, the police will actually do a debriefing, getting the information, which will help as far as the catharsis, but what the counseling will be about is educating the community as to the silent symptoms of posttraumatic stress. post people say, okay, i can do this by myself, but they really can't. they have thing an zits

george chen, a computer engineering student at ucsb seen here in pics from his facebook page. he attended leland high and had been a camp counselor at the ymca and a neighbor we spoke with described him as a wonderful boy for taking the time to help out her elderly father. a third roommate, 20-year-oldwork eihan wang, he is from fremont. he and his two previous room mates were really good friends and had dreams of starting a business when they graduated. our station spoke exclusively with his parents who are beyond belief with their grief. >> my son's whole life i'm so proud of him. very nice guy. everybody like him. he is kind of quiet, but nice to everybody. very considerate. nice to mom. >> the three room mates were three weeks away from moving out from elliot rodger in that apartment. they apparently didn't get along with him. he played loud music in the middle of the night and just didn't interact with him. >> bob, thank you. >>> the suspect's family attorney said he had asberinger syndrome, a form of ought emp. it interferes with the person's ability to communicate and f

. >> reporter: mom said her son was just three weeks away from coming home from ucsb and planning toove out of the apartment he and his roommates shared with the suspect. >>> the town of isla vista is now a crime scene that covers several blocks. many students are hesitant, frustrated and full of grief. there are so many layers to the story. how is the town reacting? >> reporter: well, raj, we are on embarcadero in the central of the commercial district. and the rampage happened all around us. and the reaction is pretty strongly felt. in front of the sorority house, students cried and hugged each other. many did not know katherine cooper or veronika weiss but they felt their loss and wanted to acknowledge it. >> everyone's hurting and especially the community and after reading his manifest toe his parents are probably just as hurt. >> reporter: this student is referring to the 137-page manifesto written by the mass killing suspect, elliot rodger. in it he singled out this sorority because it was the one with the most beautiful girls who he was convinced would reject him if he tried t

david begnaud is near ucsb right now. david? >> reporter: good evening, we are in santa barbara county here at the sheriff's department where the sheriff is about to speak. the press conference was supposed to start at the top of the hour but has been delayed. there was a man who stepped before the podium and said i am the father of one of the victims. and very emotionally this man railed against the nra and what he called irresponsible parents. but he started off by saying you never think it's going to happen to your child until it does. witnesses say a man driving a black bmw went on a drive-by rampage with a semiautomatic handgun. near the university of california's santa barbara campus friday night. >> and i just thought it was like an air soft gun or something. so i was like -- i was like hey like -- what up? and i turned around and i started walking the other way. and he -- [ crying ] and then like he shot. >> reporter: by the time he was finished, seven people were dead including the gunman. and seven others wounded. ther

nbc bay area's mark matthews has reaction from ucsb. >> instead of classes, thousands of students are expected to gather here at harder field this afternoon, the university is calling it a day of mourning and reflection for the six lives that were lost in friday's rampage. today's memorial following a series of vigils held last night in isla vista. one of them held outside the alpha fee sorority house. among the candles and flowers, students hugged and cried and talked about 20-year-old katherine cooper and 19-year-old veronica weiss, the sorority sisters gunned down friday. even though many at the vigil did not know the young women, the students felt the loss and wanted to acknowledge it. just down the street, chalk messages of love and solidarity were drawn on the sidewalk where eliot rogers stabbed his three roommates. in front of those messages, more flowers and candles. it was there that i met communications major, tyler and film student zach stein. they have set up a t-shirt fund-raising campaign to help out the victims' families. >> i sent out 200 invitations on facebook and we
