judy hahn with ucsf who spent years researching alcohol use and the impact on the human body. thank you so much for joining us this evening. dr. hahn, from your experience, is there any amount of drinking or an alcohol type that can have positive effects? >> certainly. most people who drink alcohol drink it because we enjoy it. they drink it to help cope with stress, but when we start to look at the long term health effects, we are finding more and more concerning evidence and what i think the surgeon general wants people to understand is that it does increase the risk of many types of cancer. that's not something that most people recognized in the past. most people think about alcohol causing liver disease or to be violent, but the cancer link hasn't been as well understood and there's more and more evidence that cancer is one of the things on the list that is caused by alcohol. in particular, the most concerning is breast cancer which is the most common form of cancer in women and women have been having more and more alcohol use over the years. they're starting to catch up w

well, now, a ucsf study shows a lot of young teenagers are showing true signs of addiction. thirds of kids under 13 use social media, disregarding the age limits for platforms. tiktok is the most common social media platform, and of the nearly 11,000 teens surveyed, 23% say they use social media to avoid problems. 17% tried to use less but can't. 11% say they use social media so much it's impacting their schoolwork. one of the researchers says parents need to do more than, say, put the phone down. the american academy of pediatrics recommends having these conversations as a household to try to agree upon, you know, certain rules like maybe screen free times like before bedtime or during family meals that you can all kind of agree on. that's doctor nagata, who says the biggest predictor of kids social media use is their parents use. so when you come up with that family plan, make sure that you abide by it as well. you can find some tips on how to make a media plan on the american academy of pediatrics website. so let's talk about it with your kids. don't text them about it. i
