at least two democratic senators, mark udall and mark hinrich are calling for the resignation of john brennan. this is after the cia inspector general found that agency officials improperly found their way into the senate computers during an investigation into the agency's interrogation techniques post-9/11. according to unclassified

colorado senator mark udall, another democrat on the intelligence committee, vowed today to hold president obama to his promise to declassify the report. quote, the cia should not face its past with a redaction pen, and the white house must not allow it to do so. the white house, for its part, defended the redactions this week, from that democratic criticism. >> there was a good faith effort that was made by the administration and by national security officials to evaluate this information and make redactions that are consistent with the need to protect national security, but also consistent with the president's clearly stated desire to be as transparent as possible about this. >> the president has said that we tortured some folks. he's also said that part of our national reckoning with that history is to make that history as transparent as possible in the hopes that putting it out on the public record will help ensure that it never happens again. this report from the senate intelligence committee has been underway for 5 1/2 years now.

mark udall says he is concerned about mr. brennan's inability to find any flaws in the agency he leads. joining me is david ignatius, of "the washington post." he knows the cia better than anyone. let me begin with this. just explain what they did, and what the investigation concluded about the cia, and why it was important that john brennan had to apologize to the senators? >> the core issue is that the cia inspector general was looking at was how cia employees learned that senate committee staffers, who since 2009 have been preparing a report on cia interrogation practices, learned of the fact that senate staffers had a document, which is the panetta review document, when the cia officials didn't believe that had been provided to the senate investigators as part of a hearing dump of documents that was given to the investigators. when the cia made those requests about where the documents had come from the senate investigators were inquiring about, a real standoff between the committee chairman, dianne feinstein and john bren

udal in colorado, are they getting worried about the overreach in the white house that might resonateh the voters? >> they might be. it was one thing when it was several months ago. there was not a crisis in the boarder and people were not thinking about immigration and fast ford to now in august, polls show that people are not exactly thrilled with the idea of pushing forward authorization of illegal immigrants in the united states to be legalized and they may be rethinking pushing the president to do this. and i think the president may be rethinking it as well. we'll have to see what happens in the next couple of months, but the politics are more complex than people thought in the beginning of the year. >> take us inside of the dome there. bottom line, when we push in the white house on the executive actions they tell us that house republicans are not moving on comprehensive immigration reform. are the republicans feeling heat of not acting and why the president goes on his own? >> that is why the house republicans delayed the recess. they told boehner they have to appear to do some

but at least two members of the senate intelligence committee, democrats mark udall of colorao and martinch of new mexico, are calling for brennan's resignation. we are joined now by the reporter who first broke the news of the cia's admission to spying on senate computers. jonathan landay is senior national security and intelligence correspondent for mcclatchy newspapers. also in washington, d.c. thank you for being with us. talk about this revelation that you just exposed. , what after all of this had been a behind-the-scenes battle, unprecedented battle between the cia and senate overseers, apparently john brennan asked his inspector general, david buckley, to look into senator feinstein's allegations that the cia had, in fact, without authorization, and in breach of an agreement with the senate staff, had intruded into a database that was for use by the senate staff only. apparently, david buckley came back with his findings that a number of cia i.t. specialists, three i.t. specialists, five cia officers, and, i believe it was two attorneys, had, in fact, without permission, breached
